Job Description

Non Profit Director of Communications sought for The HistoryMakers (www.thehistorymakers.org), a national 501(c ) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to creating an unprecedented national video oral history collection of first person narratives of both well known and unsung African American leaders and becoming the digital repository for the black experience. This position is responsible for the strategic public relations and marketing efforts of the organization and will report directly to the Founder & President. This individual must have prior nonprofit communications experience on a national level and work to ensure that The HistoryMakers is viewed as a primary source and disseminator for information about the black experience. He/she will be responsible for setting and guiding the strategy for all communications, op ed columns, website and public relations messages. demonstrate a commitment to The HistoryMakers’ mission as well as be able to function in a mission-oriented organization with a sense of urgency and ethics. 
 
This person will: 
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the annual communications plan across the organization’s discreet audiences.
  • Develop, distribute and maintain all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, annual report, e-newsletters, fact-sheets, briefing papers, and The HistoryMakers website in order to ensure coherence of brand and organizational messaging.  
  • Develop national and local media lists, coordinate communications activities for The HistoryMakers and engage in active and strategic “pitching” of prospective media contacts.  
  • Develop and implement communications and spokesperson trainings for staff, volunteers and board members. 

Job Requirements

Required Skills and Attributes 
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, strong editorial and proof-reading skills and high level of attention to detail. 
  • Proven public relations and marketing skills. 
  • Proven experience working with the media and the press. 
  • Flexible attitude and proven experience working in a small team. 
  • Ability to build rapport with a wide range of stakeholders. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to devise creative and innovative marketing and public relations strategies and solutions. 
Educational Requirements 
  • Undergraduate degree required. (Preference for Journalism, Marketing or related fields) 
  • 3-5 years experience in Communications, Public Relations and Marketing
