The Atlantic is seeking an experienced and energetic editorial leader to join our newsroom, focusing on defense, national security, and technology. The ideal candidate has many years of experience editing deeply reported and beautifully written stories about some combination of the following topics: the U.S. military and its culture and history, the Pentagon, national politics, global affairs, technology, and the ways in which technological advances are shaping all of the above. You should have a love of magazine journalism and a natural instinct for where a complicated story is going in the short-term and long-term. Regional expertise in Asia, the Pacific, or the Middle East is a plus but not a must.

Responsibilities include:

  • Help to expand The Atlantic’s defense, national security, and technology coverage
  • Edit moment-to-moment coverage at the intersection of defense, national security, and technology, as well as identify targets for The Atlantic’s biggest feature stories on much longer timelines about these same subjects
  • Building out The Atlantic’s roster of staff and freelance writers who cover defense, national security, and technology
  • Work closely with editorial leadership and editors across The Atlantic in coverage planning and execution

Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent writing skills
  • Superior editing skills
  • Experience editing stories on varying timelines, from real-time analysis to longer-term reporting projects
  • Ability to translate complex ideas into engaging magazine storytelling for a broad audience
  • Exceptional ability to communicate clearly in a fast-paced environment
  • A sophisticated understanding of the U.S. military, its chain of command, and related agencies
  • Impeccable editorial judgment
  • A desire to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with the potential for night and weekend work
  • Strong collaborative skills
  • A demonstrated ability to get the best work out of writers with different skills and levels of experience
  • A belief in going wherever the story takes you

This position is based in Washington, D.C.

Salary minimum: $100K; Salary maximum: $200K
