Disney Entertainment’s eight-owned ABC stations are multiplatform leaders in local news and information. WABC-TV has been the leader in local news and entertainment programming in the New York City area for more than 60 years. Producing more than 45 hours of live, local news and weather each week, Channel 7 “Eyewitness News” is the most-watched local news in New York and the United States. The Vice President, Programming is responsible for the Programming strategy for all non-news programs across WABC. In collaboration with other Department Heads the VP, Programming develops and leads weekly programming schedules in the local market, as well as LIVE nationally. The VP is also responsible for managing the programming department that creates and produces local specials in the digital and social spaces for WABC. This role drives alliance and collaboration across multiple markets, partnering with OTV and Disney Television leaders!

 

Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:

  • Oversees the production for the nationally syndicated program, LIVE with Kelly and Mark, as well as the overall programming strategy for all non-news programs.

  • Leads the Programming Department to create and produce local specials for air and digital/social platforms, inclusive of the public affairs program “Here and Now”

  • Sets up weekly programming schedules for all local time periods

  • Leads filing all department FCC requirements, including station renewals

  • Responsible for record-keeping for any music used on the station, from public domain to direct licensing

  • Secures all syndicated products for the station

  • Drive alignment on projects between Programming and Community events where appropriate

  • Work with all departments for station-wide projects (i.e., NYC Marathon, parades)

  • Drives alliance with all OTV program directors for Company-wide projects.

  • Drives synergy and programming opportunities directly with the Marketing and Audience Development teams on the best content for growth and distribution

  • Work directly with content creators and lead content initiatives, both inside and outside the station.

  • Drive programming transformation as we shift emphasis to multi-platform, original content

  • Manages talent and other job-related duties or projects as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum of ten years of experience working in the media entertainment industry

  • A demonstrated track record of managing the creative expression of a media brand on and off-air.

  • Experience supervising the development and production of live events and series programming.

  • Excellent leadership skills and an ability to inspire a creative, positive, supportive, and encouraging work environment.

  • Ability to recognize, create, and communicate priorities, strategies, opportunities, and challenges while driving growth and performance improvement.

  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills

  • Ability to nurture collaboration and innovation among all team members

  • Candidate should be familiar with studio operations, including the show’s director, control room staff, studio crew, and the show’s producers.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with booking guests and reviewing show ideas with the Executive Producer.

  • Experience with dealing with agents and publicists, plus experience with talent relations.

  • Experience with, or deep understanding of, brand management across digital platforms (online, mobile, etc.), including social media

  • A strong understanding of how to use research and data analytics tools to drive audience engagement and media buying on all platforms

 

Required Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience

The hiring range for this position in New York is $189,000 to $253,000 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
