Job Description

Job title: Multimedia Editor, Audio, Scientific American

Location: New York (Hybrid Working Model)

Scientific American, the oldest continuously published magazine in the U.S., reaches millions of people each month through its print magazine, app and social media and on ScientificAmerican.com. We publish expert-written opinions and feature stories; news and feature articles by leading journalists; and award-winning graphics, art and multimedia. Our work is translated in more than 20 international magazine editions that are read around the world.

Scientific American seeks an audio-focused Multimedia Editor to produce our flagship podcast program, Science, Quickly, and to expand the show’s audience and reach. The editor will work closely with engagement, art and text editors in a collaborative and creative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Produce three podcast episodes a week, in close collaboration with the podcast host, chief multimedia editor/executive producer, and a range of freelance reporters, producers and editors to explain highly important scientific news and stories
  • Report to the chief multimedia editor, and work with editors across Scientific American
  • Work on audio distribution strategies for Scientific American’s website and social spaces
  • Help coordinate our production operations, managing both field and studio recordings
  • Contribute to team discussions, idea-generation, and editorial strategy
  • Develop awareness of timely issues in science, science policy and the scientific community
  • Help identify breaking news stories and trending topics for coverage
  • Work to ensure consistent deliverables that meet the high standards of quality and audio storytelling at Scientific American

Experience, skills and qualifications

Essential

  • At least 5 years of experience in audio reporting, editing and post-production
  • A wide range post-production and editing abilities, demonstrating experience in the Adobe suite, particularly in Audition (ProTools experience is optional, but not SciAm’s preferred DAW)
  • Be able to successfully juggle projects and people across different deadlines and timescales
  • Show a portfolio of recent, relevant work
  • Work collaboratively and collegially
  • Show a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and justice

Desirable

  • Have a passion for science and health storytelling
  • Have at least one skill that you would like to develop professionally—and one skill you can gift to others on the team (more than that is welcomed!)
