JOB BAND: C

CONTRACT TYPE: Fixed-term Contract, Full-time – at will. Anticipated length of contract, 12 monthes.

DEPARTMENT: BBC News 

LOCATION: Office Base is either Washington DC, New York City or Los Angeles, USA

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: $75,000 – $90,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

This is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in the US (US citizenship, Green Card or work authorisation).

PURPOSE OF ROLE

As BBC News expands its presence in North America, we’re seeking a dynamic Weekend Live Reporter to deliver fast, engaging live coverage for BBC.com/news and our app, including on weekends. Based in Washington DC, New York, or Los Angeles, you’ll play a key role in connecting millions of US and global readers to trusted, impartial journalism. This is a unique opportunity to shape how audiences experience breaking news, while upholding the BBC’s editorial excellence and global reputation.

 

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

You will be part of a team reporting and writing daily, breaking news live blogs on the biggest stories in North America, from US politics and high-profile criminal trials to mega-storms and the Met Gala. Our live reporting pages use text, pictures, videos and streams to provide fast, immersive and insightful coverage. You will work under two senior live blog editors based in the US but collaborate closely with Live team colleagues in London on the biggest global stories. 

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

• Deliver fast, engaging live news coverage for BBC.com/news and the BBC News app, with a strong focus on accuracy, clarity, and creativity in tone, pace, and format.
• Write standalone news stories as needed, demonstrating versatility and strong editorial judgement across a range of topics relevant to North American and global audiences.
• Work a flexible schedule, including early and late shifts as well as most weekends, as part of a seven-day digital operation based in Washington DC, New York, or Los Angeles.
• Collaborate with colleagues across time zones, contributing to a dynamic, high-performing newsroom that values initiative, teamwork, and editorial excellence.
• Champion diversity and inclusion, helping to foster a supportive and representative newsroom culture in line with the BBC’s core values.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Proven journalistic instincts with the ability to respond swiftly to breaking news, producing fast, accurate copy using a variety of sources, including BBC reporting.
• Creative flair for live coverage, with an understanding of its unique demands and a passion for developing innovative, mobile-first storytelling formats.
• Strong editorial judgement and a track record of covering major national and international stories, generating fresh angles and daily coverage ideas.
• Clear, accessible writing style tailored for North American and global audiences, with a commitment to the BBC’s values of accuracy and impartiality.
• Collaborative and adaptable, able to thrive under pressure in a fast-paced newsroom, using social media and audience data to enhance reach and engagement.
