Job Description:
WMUR, Hearst Television’s ABC affiliate in Manchester, NH has an opening for a full-time Assignment Editor. An assignment editor is responsible for coordinating and assigning news stories to the team. A successful candidate will be plugged into what’s happening in our community, the organization and creativity to plan coverage across all platforms. You must be able to communicate with people, internally and externally. Building contacts is a must! You must work well under deadlines and have the ability to focus and break stories. The assignment editor must work collaboratively with many different teams including reporters, producers, videographers, production, engineering, digital and creative services. You will report to our Managing Editor.
Responsibilities
- Listen to multiple police scanners which cover dozens of agencies throughout our market
- Gather and organize press releases, emails, phone calls and viewer tips. Decide which will yield compelling content for our news platforms
- Lead portions of the editorial meetings
- Assist news management with content gathering and planning
- Assist producers, digital editors and reporters with newsgathering
- Keep track of crews in the field and communicate with them
- Plan logistics for some live shots, big coverage and events
- Produce content to all digital platforms
- In person attendance required
Requirements
- Experience listening to police scanners
- Experience with digital platforms, especially social media. You will monitor multiple social media accounts to gather content and communicate with news makers
- Experience writing and producing content for all digital platforms
- Familiar with local newsgathering technology and terminology
- Maintain professional working relationships with newsmakers
- Gather information from multiple sources simultaneously and quickly push it out to the news team
- Ability to remain calm and level-headed during breaking news situations
- Available to consistently work nights and weekend nights. Willing to work various shifts, including holidays
- Related military experience will be considered
