The Opportunity: 
The Regional Manager for the South/Southwest is charged with helping to oversee the organization's journalists (corps members) and the media companies they work for in a region including Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The position is remote, though the person must live in the region for travel purposes.

The successful candidate will be one of five regional managers who together will support a corps of more than 150 journalists in 140 host news organizations throughout the country. This role is the front line of supporting the next generation of journalists and innovative news organizations working to thrive in a challenging environment. Also, a big part of the job is looking for new partners and opportunities to enhance and even reimagine local news. They report to the Director of Corps and Newsroom Excellence.
We seek people who understand journalism, are smart, and good listeners, and are advocates for good journalism and press freedom. You must also be empathetic, but tough when necessary; great at "reading between the lines"; and, a team player. Travel in the region is at least 30 percent of the position.
 
What you'll do

• Counsel and advise corps members, supporting their growth and professional development
• Work with newsrooms hosting corps members to support a good experience in the Report for America program for the newsroom and the corps member 
• Conduct regular check-ins with employers and corps members and plan occasional visits
• Scout potential newsrooms and other partner organizations in your region to work with Report for America
• Work with our Recruitment team to identify and liaise with professional organizations, local universities and other groups to attract potential corps members
• Propose and, working with the Director of Corps Excellence, initiate local, state and/or partnerships in your region on behalf of Report for America 
• Work alongside Report for America colleagues to identify and promote speaking engagements, conference participation and other opportunities for Report for America staffers, corps members, funders and partners in your region
• Working with other regional managers, actively participate in the application process, assessing applications from newsrooms and prospective corps members and creating cohorts 
• Oversee or participate in other projects as needed

Salary: $90,000 - $95,000
 
What You'll Bring:

• Bachelor's degree preferred.
• A minimum of 7 years of experience as a reporter and/or editor in a local news setting 
• A genuine passion for local journalism
• Proven experience in mentoring individuals in one-on-one or cohort settings
• Excellent listening and observation skills
• Great problem solving skills, and an ability to help others navigate solving problems
• Excellent multi-tasking skills
• Ability to thrive in a collaborative nonprofit environment, working effectively with diverse stakeholders.
• Experience in a local digital-first newsroom a plus
• Fluency in Spanish a plus
