Your Role:

Institutional Giving builds and fortifies Minnesota Public Radio | American Public Media (“MPR|APM”) by securing and stewarding five, six, and seven-figure grants from foundations, corporations, and government agencies. Institutional Giving broadens institutional support, engages new funders, and deepens established relationships.

The Development Officer works closely with content producers and MPR|APM leadership to develop and submit high-quality funding proposals and to apprise funders about the progress and impact of grant-funded activities. The Development Officer collaborates with a team of institutional giving colleagues and coordinates with MPR|APM’s individual giving, membership, and underwriting teams. The Development Officer also advances MPR|APM’s efforts to diversify its organization and its audiences, and to fulfill deep commitments to equity and inclusion.

Location: Hybrid, St. Paul, MN.

Expected Compensation Range: $78,500 - $82,000 / annualized. The exact rate is determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Position Responsibilities:

• Manage secured awards to ensure successful implementation; monitor and report on grant-funded activities to strengthen relationships with funders and increase the likelihood of subsequent awards (40%).
• Build strong working relationships with other MPR|APM departments, especially Philanthropic Development and Content to advance proposals and fulfill terms of grant awards. (20%).
• Assemble quantitative and qualitative evidence to strengthen proposals and reports on awards. Maintain records of funder contacts and conversations in Sales Force (10%).
• Monitor and analyze public media programming and funding trends (10%)
• Working with the Institutional Giving team to develop and execute a comprehensive institutional development strategy and plan (10%).
• Ensure that Institutional Giving standard practices related to grant development and management are implemented and improved (10%).

 

Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in grant seeking and management in media, arts, civic affairs, education, or public policy.

 

 Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Proven track record of securing grants.
• Proven capacity with project management.
• Experience in budget preparation, analysis, and monitoring.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication capacities to describe complex ideas and activities in coherent and compelling ways.
• Clear evidence of strategic judgment, integrity, and collaborative acumen
• Capacity to comprehend and execute policies and practices funders require of grant recipients.
• Capacity to earn the respect and timely responses of colleagues, senior executive personnel, and external partners.
• Build collaborative relationships with funders that incline them to make subsequent awards.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, SharePoint) and Salesforce.

 

 Preferred Skills and Experience:

• Experience with Salesforce or fundraising software is a plus.
• Knowledge of public radio programming, or experience in other non-profit media is a major advantage.
• Proven success in setting and meeting fundraising goals.
