to create and steward multichannel communications content and campaigns to communicate about NREL’s innovative Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES). This position may be a great match if:
You have experience in—and are passionate about—translating science subject matter into compelling communications content to engage a range of stakeholders through multiple channels.
You love working with researchers and organizational leadership on communications strategies and materials for evolving, complex research concepts and their definition, refinement, and presentation for internal and external awareness, understanding, and growth.
You work well independently yet welcome support/collaboration and excel at coordinating the many communications staff and functions needed to execute on presentations, proposals, websites, videos, and other communications projects.
You thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment and are highly responsive; you are able to successfully execute last-minute requests and adapt to changing priorities on high-visibility work.
This position at NREL requires the ability to quickly learn and handle a variety of tasks—whether that’s building and coordinating graphics for a PowerPoint deck for a presentation or executing a routine web update—and manage multiple projects concurrently with limited supervision, in order to support communications for NREL’s ARIES.
You’ll work closely with a large group of dedicated, creative communicators in a fast-paced agency-like setting. You will drive the production of content through collaboration with team leads, clients, project managers, writers, editors, videographers, web specialists, and graphic designers. Primary job functions include:
Management of timelines, deliverables, details, roles, and budgets for a variety of communications projects.
Working directly with NREL research staff and leadership to support communications efforts, including crafting internal and external communications strategies, building engaging PowerPoint presentations, collaborating with designers to develop graphics for a publication or proposal, and more.
Science communication, including reviewing complex technical information from research staff and translating it into clear content for a variety of target audiences and media—such as news stories, social media posts, email newsletters, and videos.
Coordinating web content for key sections of NREL.gov, including working with researchers to develop content, ensuring content adheres to NREL’s web standards, and coordinating internally with web developers to code content in NREL’s content management system.
Problem solving, team collaboration, and project management through Microsoft Teams, and documentation in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.

NREL is the only U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory dedicated to renewable energy and energy efficiency research. The NREL Communications Office (CO) is comprised of communications experts in a variety of disciplines focused on raising awareness about the lab and DOE programs. This position resides in CO’s Science and Technology Communications Group, which consists of 12 teams representing NREL’s wide-ranging research areas.
Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism or related and 5 or more years of experience related to the job description. Or, Master's Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism and 3 or more years of experience related to the job description.
