Job Description

Civic News Company, parent company of the nonprofit newsrooms Healthbeat, covering public health and health policy both nationally and locally; Chalkbeat, focused on telling the story of education in America; and Votebeat, dedicated to in-depth reporting on elections and voting, is seeking a Growth and Community Editor, Healthbeat. This role will drive the implementation of Civic News Company’s audience strategy within Healthbeat, ensuring that local editorial priorities align with the organization’s broader growth framework.

This position reports to the Vice President, Growth and Community.

The key responsibilities for this role include:

Audience Execution and Optimization

  • Implement Civic News Company’s growth and community framework within Healthbeat, following the systems and cadence established by the VP, Growth and Community and the Deputy Managing Editor.

  • Oversee daily distribution, SEO optimization, and engagement efforts across platforms, ensuring alignment with editorial priorities.

  • Plan and execute social media campaigns in coordination with the Deputy Managing Editor and Social Media Strategist, ensuring creative assets, targeting, and budgets align with CNC’s growth goals.

  • Coach Healthbeat staff on audience development, SEO, and social media best practices; collaborate with local partners to expand reach and engagement.

  • Support on-site presentation and content packaging to drive reach, engagement, and audience retention.

  • Partner with the Newsletter Editor to advance subscriber growth through testing, optimization, and list-building initiatives.

  • Transform key reporting and other editorial content into short videos, social posts, newsletter components, and on-site hubs. Coordinating with reporters to gather necessary content and film quick updates yourself when needed. 

Community Engagement and Insight

  • Collect and synthesize reader insights from social media, events, and surveys to inform editorial priorities and strengthen community connections.

  • Collaborate with Healthbeat leadership to integrate engagement strategies that reflect the editorial mission and CNC’s audience growth objectives.

  • Support Healthbeat events and engagement-driven reporting that amplify community voices and reader participation.

  • Identify and share meaningful reader feedback and audience trends for inclusion in weekly audience reports.

 

 


Job Requirements

What background and skills do you have? (We know not all strong candidates will have all the skills we list. That’s OK. What else do you bring to the table? Please tell us!):

  • 4-7 years experience in audience growth, engagement, or newsroom operations, ideally within a mission-driven or nonprofit media organization.

  • Deep understanding of audience development across SEO, newsletters, and social media platforms.

  • Proven ability to turn data and insights into actionable strategies that inform editorial and distribution decisions.

  • Experience managing daily workflows across multiple channels, including on-site optimization and social distribution.

  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with editors, reporters, and analytics teams.

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to balance short-term tasks with long-term strategic goals.

  • Commitment to Civic News Company’s mission and to fostering trust, inclusion, and equity across the communities we serve.

Bonus points if you’ve got:

  • Experience leading or supporting social media campaigns, including creative development and audience targeting.

  • Familiarity with analytics tools such as GA4, Looker Studio, Parse.ly, or native social and newsletter metrics.

  • Understanding of testing frameworks (A/B or multivariate) and how to apply them to audience and content strategies.

  • Experience coaching newsroom staff on audience growth, SEO, and engagement best practices.

  • Background in building partnerships or collaborations that expand reach or deepen community impact.

  • Fluency with workflow and project management tools such as Airtable, Asana, or Slack.

This full-time, remote-eligible position may be based anywhere in the continental United States. Civic News Company already has a presence: Chicago, Colorado, Indianapolis, Newark, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Texas, Michigan, Tennessee, New York City, and Washington, D.C. 

The salary range is $75,000-$80,000; final salary will be determined based on level of experience and geographic location, with a generous benefits package, including:

Civic News Company recognizes a staff bargaining unit, Civic News Company, affiliated with the Writers Guild of America, East, a labor union representing thousands of members who write content for news and online media, motion pictures, and television. This position is included in the Civic News Company bargaining unit.
