Position Summary

WPLN News, part of Nashville Public Radio, seeks a News Editor to help lead a thriving newsroom devoted to accurate, nuanced reporting. This role mentors a diverse team of reporters, guides editorial decision-making, and upholds Nashville Public Radio’s commitment to storytelling, equity, and public service. We’re interested in someone who can be a coach for our reporters and a key decision maker among newsroom leadership. 

Requirements:

Essential Responsibilities

• Edit daily and in-depth stories for accuracy, clarity, and context.

• Guide reporters in developing enterprise story ideas beyond daily news.

• Lead and mentor 3–5 reporters through weekly check-ins and beat development.

• Support reporters in preparing and presenting work on This Is Nashville, Nashville Public Radio’s daily show.

• Contribute to newsroom leadership through coverage decisions, workflow planning, and long-term strategy.

• Serve as a station ambassador at community events and build relationships with Nashville communities.

• Foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture.

• Serve as primary afternoon newscast editor during a 9 a.m.–6 p.m. schedule (with occasional extended hours).

 

Qualifications

• Minimum of five years’ experience working in a daily-deadline newsroom.

• Strong writing and editing skills with an emphasis on accuracy, clarity and narrative strength. 

• Experience mentoring, coaching, or supporting journalists.

• Demonstrated leadership abilities; prior management experience not required.

• Ability to collaborate across departments and within diverse teams.

• Commitment to equity and thoughtful coverage of underserved communities.

• Ability to think enterprisingly and guide reporters toward deeper, contextual stories.

• Passion for public-service journalism and community-focused storytelling.

•$70K+ commensurate with experience
