Job Description

WUOT 91.9 FM, East Tennessee’s trusted NPR member station, licensed to the University of Tennessee and based in vibrant Knoxville, is seeking an inspiring and visionary News Director to help redefine what public radio journalism can be. This is a rare opportunity for a leader who thrives on collaboration, innovation, and purpose-driven storytelling to shape the future of local news—while working in partnership with the College of Communication and Information’s (CCI) cutting-edge Media Center to produce award-winning, cross-platform journalism.

You’ll lead WUOT’s award-winning news team, a small but passionate group of journalists recognized for their excellence in reporting and deep commitment to public service. Even more exciting, you’ll have the opportunity to expand and shape your team—bringing your editorial vision to life by recruiting, mentoring, and developing both emerging and established talent. You’ll also play a key role in training the next generation of journalists, working closely with CCI’s students to provide hands-on experience, professional mentorship, and meaningful opportunities to contribute to impactful journalism.

As News Director, you will set the editorial direction and guide your team in delivering stories that inform, inspire, and reflect the diverse voices of our region. You’ll make critical editorial decisions that prioritize depth, impact, and trust—and you’ll be a steadfast guardian of journalistic independence, ensuring our coverage remains free from outside influence.

We're looking for someone who believes in the power of journalism to strengthen democracy and foster community. You’ll bring bold ideas and smart strategies to the coverage of major events, such as elections and state issues, while developing agile systems to respond quickly to breaking news. If you're passionate about community-centered journalism, eager to grow and lead a dynamic newsroom, and excited to innovate while helping shape the future of the field, we want to hear from you.

And while you're building a meaningful career, you'll also enjoy an exceptional quality of life. Knoxville is a lively, welcoming city with a thriving arts and culture scene, a low cost of living, and a strong sense of community. Nestled at the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it offers unparalleled access to outdoor adventures—whether you enjoy hiking, biking, paddling, or simply soaking in the mountain views. It's the perfect blend of urban energy and natural beauty, making it an ideal place to live, work, and thrive.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:
