InvestigateWest is seeking a full-time investigative editor to oversee a team of staff reporters and freelancers working across the Pacific Northwest. Founded in 2009 as a nonprofit, InvestigateWest is dedicated to producing change-making investigative journalism for the region, and over the years our work has resulted in a dozen new state laws and a number of other significant reforms. This editor will oversee the reporting team’s work on a day-to-day basis, collaborate with a second editor, and report to the executive director.
This leadership role is full-time and includes benefits. We are open to editors working remotely from home anywhere in the state of Washington, Oregon or Idaho.
We’re looking for someone who:
Has a track record of editing impactful data-driven and narrative investigations.
Has experience managing a team of 3-6 reporters who are juggling short- and long-term projects.
Aspires to great storytelling and studies the giants of the craft.
Takes pride in helping others do their best work.
Can work both independently and collaboratively.
Knows how to spot an accountability/investigative target in a reporter’s unfocused pitch.
Can support reporters fighting public records fights, provide source suggestions and assist in finding research/data.
Brings a little extra to the table (like data skills, narrative chops, engagement skills, design thinking, photography).
We are dedicated to making our organization better reflect the region we cover and are committed to fostering an inclusive environment for people of different ages and backgrounds. We encourage members of historically underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
Compensation: The salary range is $70,000-$80,000, depending on experience. Also, a monthly work-from-home stipend of $100, 100% coverage of health insurance, 50% dental coverage and a matching retirement savings plan.
Send us a cover letter, resume and five work samples using this form; Deadline: April 22. Email questions to hiring@invw.org. No phone calls, please.
