Job Description

The Atlantic is seeking an afternoon-evening editor to join our newsroom audience engagement team, whose mission includes maximizing the reach and impact of our journalism, cultivating relationships with readers and building habit among them.

This journalist should be a strategic thinker who views the work of audience-building as a creative challenge. Impeccable judgment, excellent writing and editing skills, and agility are a must.

The Atlantic is focused on helping new and existing readers to understand the value and power of the ideas, arguments and expertise that have animated our writer-driven publication since its founding in 1857.

In this role, you will:

  • Work with the team’s senior editors to develop and execute plans for engaging audiences with Atlantic stories across a range of digital platforms, helping to continually evaluate and refine our approach.
  • Write and edit promotional copy for Atlantic stories on surfaces that include our app, the home page and article page, newsletters, and social media platforms.
  • Engage evening audiences and own The Atlantic’s late afternoon evening story promotion, including The Daily newsletter.
  • Maintain relationships with partner platforms (such as Apple News), helping our journalism reach a broad audience.
  • Suggest creative ways to find and build audiences on platforms.
  • Help to design, execute, and analyze rigorous tests to understand audience behavior on various platforms.
  • Advance the team’s efforts to build and share a deep and dynamic understanding of our audiences on each major platform—formulating and researching your own inquiries and sharing their results with newsroom colleagues.

Qualities of a successful candidate include:

  • 3+ years of experience operating news-branded social media accounts.
  • Scrupulous attention to detail, including writing structure, mechanics, grammar, and spelling. Copy desk experience is a plus.
  • A collegial, energetic, “yes and” approach to problem solving and creative endeavors.
  • The ability to manage time, communicate clearly with a manager, accomplish both discrete tasks and longer-term projects on deadline, and switch easily between different duties.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong editorial judgment.
  • Critical thinking, attention to process, and an appetite to experiment and explore.
  • Experience working with editorial data and tracking tools (Google Analytics, Chartbeat, Looker) is a plus.
  • Experience with graphic and video editing (including Adobe Premiere, Figma, CapCut and others) is a plus.

The role will be for an afternoon- evening ET, Monday - Friday shift, and will involve occasional later nights, early mornings, and weekends.

Salary Minimum: $77,000;  Salary Maximum: $82,000

This is a Guild position.
