General Job Description:

ABC 57 News is looking for an Assignment Editor to find the stories about our area that we all want to hear. We are seeking someone who will build strong connections in the Michiana Community, local government, and emergency personnel. This job requires a highly organized individual that can keep track of several projects at once and is also able to drop everything at a moments notice when a big story happens.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Monitor multiple sources for possible news stories.

Responsible for being a key communicator in the newsroom.

Understand newscast mission, station priorities and be familiar with all the platforms.

Respond to breaking news with urgency and accuracy.

Help choose which journalists, photographers, and other staff members are assigned to cover stories.

Knowledge and demonstration of creativity, editorial judgment, journalistic ethics and libel laws.

Work with Multimedia Journalists and Reporters to improve story and presentation.

Stay on top of all stories to ensure they’re developing as planned.

Be the main point of communication between reporters, production teams, and executive staff on developing stories.

Other duties, as assigned.

Requirements:

Must be able to multitask, especially when handling breaking news.

Previous experience with technology a plus.

Strong organizational and communication skills and keen editorial judgment are a requirement.

Must be able and willing to work different shifts and be flexible with schedule changes.

Must be able to work independently and as part of a team on various projects.
