Job Description

Are you interested in writing big stories about the smallest state economy in the U.S.?

VTDigger is searching for a versatile journalist to cover business, labor and economic issues in Vermont — and to fill gaps elsewhere in our coverage as a flexible general assignment reporter.

You’ll search for trends and developments in Vermont’s eclectic economy, including its tech, manufacturing, health care, education, tourism, outdoor recreation, hospitality and service sectors. By working your sources, combing through reports and analyzing data, you’ll develop an understanding of the challenges Vermont businesses face and the opportunities they have to innovate and grow. And you’ll explain to our readers how changes in the state’s economy are affecting workers, consumers and taxpayers.

On the business beat, you’ll track the many leads we get through our tip line — and you’ll find creative ways to nail stories when sources are not being forthcoming. You’ll bird-dog the state agencies charged with supporting, promoting and regulating businesses, and localize changes in federal policy. During Vermont’s four-month legislative session, you’ll be a member of our Statehouse team, keeping an eye on committees with jurisdiction over issues within your beat. And you’ll look for new ways to tell familiar stories about Vermont’s workforce shortage, aging population and slow deployment of broadband to its most rural corners.

As a general assignment reporter, you will also be called upon to cover stories in other realms. This position could evolve over time, based on the newsroom’s needs and your interests.

We’re looking for an energetic and curious reporter who will proactively pitch stories, work on in-depth pieces in the background and turn on a dime, as needed.

Compensation & benefits: The salary range for this full-time role is $45,000 to $55,000 annually, commensurate with experience. We offer industry-leading benefits in a positive and flexible work culture. These include 5+ weeks of paid time off, plus holidays, parental leave, generous employer contribution to medical insurance, available group vision and dental insurance, and employer-provided EAP, life and disability insurance. We offer a 403(b) retirement plan with employer contribution.

We encourage members of communities that are traditionally underrepresented and misrepresented in the media to apply to join our team, including those who are Black, Indigenous or people of color; women; LGBTQ+ people; and people with disabilities.
