Job Description

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are at the core of our mission to strengthen and empower the communities we serve.

PennLive.com is looking for an innovative reporter to lead our Capitol bureau coverage.

We’re seeking someone who can dive in and cover the day-to-day chaos during busy legislative session days, but whose main focus will be watchdog journalism.

We need a curious journalist who can produce coverage with impact. An individual who can build sources, dig into data, follow the money, pinpoint problems, and advocate for taxpayers and people in need.

This isn’t an entry-level job. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate she/he has delivered difficult watchdog work before. If that’s you, let us know what you’ve done and bring some ideas about what you’ll accomplish in Pennsylvania’s Capitol.

This position pays between $60,000 to $72,000 annually.

With your application, please include a cover letter, telling us why you’d be a good fit for this position and provide links to your stories.

Please don’t ask if this job can be done remotely. The successful applicant will work primarily out of the Capitol, in Harrisburg, PA, with the option, at times, to work from our newsroom or home.

This job requires reliable transportation to meet with sources and attend events.

Job Requirements

Qualified candidates should have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years reporting experience
  • The ability to work quickly, but with accuracy and good news judgment.
  • Watchdog or investigative journalism experience.
  • Ability to develop and cultivate sources.
  • Good understanding of using social media for research and to engage readers.
  • Digital storytelling skills and open mind to trying new approaches.
  • Relentless curiosity.
