The Buffalo News, an award-winning daily news organization in New York’s second-largest city, is seeking a discerning Opinion Editor to lead our Editorial Board.
Our opinion coverage is a marketplace of ideas. Thoughts on local and national issues are reflected through local and syndicated columns, letters to the editor and cartoons. We work collaboratively and collegially to produce sharp institutional opinions on matters of public interest, ranging from the serious to the light and focusing mainly on local and state issues. We want to be interesting, entertaining and provocative.
The ideal candidate will develop opinion coverage that steers debate and community conversation with editorials, columns and video that offers thoughtful takes on current events and policy issues. Working with our editorial writers and cartoonist, this editor will create smart commentary that shines a light on issues that affect the lives of residents. Topics of high interest include public safety, government accountability, education, housing and equity.
Community engagement is a key component of this position. Candidates should have a track record of building connections with diverse communities, sparking growth in contributed letters, opinion pieces and video commentary. Community discussions led by The News’ opinion team or through community partnership is an important part of our engagement strategy.
Requirements •At least five years of professional opinion writing experience •Managerial experience •Strong reporting and editing ability •Robust knowledge of issues affecting Buffalo and Western New York •Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism or related field •Expertise in SEO, headline writing and utilizing metrics to analyze our digital audience
