Job Title: Executive Producer, PBS News Weekend
Reports to: Senior Executive Producer, PBS News Hour 
Status: Full -Time, Exempt
Salary Range: $160,000 - $170,000
 
Position Overview: 
 
The Executive Producer of PBS News Weekend supervises editorial and production of the Saturday and Sunday, 30-minute editions of the weekday news program, PBS News Hour. The EP will be report to the Senior Executive Producer of the PBS NewsHour and participate in producing daily and special event coverage with NewsHour Productions as well. The EP will supervise the Wednesday-Sunday staffs and work closely with the NewsHour senior leadership to ensure careful coordination of resources and communications inside of the newly expanding seven-day a week newsroom.
 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Manage broadcast content from planning through live production including personnel, budget, coordinating workflow, maintaining highest standards for editorial and maximizing resources and opportunities for meaningful journalism, including breaking news.
  • Work closely with Senior Executive Producer to hone vision for evolution, efficient workflows, and growth the broadcast 
  • Work closely with News Hour senior leadership on hiring open positions and managing staff and any freelance personnel or contributors. 
  • Make assignments and supervise execution of all editorial elements for broadcast.
  • Work closely with the Digital leadership regarding weekend digital team and production of associated digital and social content around the programs
  •  Supervise adjustments for breaking and developing news as well as planning ahead for longer term projects.
  •  Supervise live control room production for Weekend broadcasts.
  • As member of senior leadership of NewsHour Productions, contribute to the weekday NewsHour program as well as special programming.  Backfill executive producer of weekly public affair talk shows, Washington Week with the Atlantic, as needed.
  • Perform related special projects or other duties as assigned.

Additional Skills and Qualifications:    

  • Bachelor’s Degree. 
  • At least 10 years of experience in a daily newsroom, including senior leadership and management, preferably in a national news broadcast outlet. 
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • 10 + years of experience in a variety of newsroom roles with an emphasis on recent senior leadership and management experience. 
  • Experience with both day of air news production including breaking news circumstances, and longer form analysis and feature programming. 
  • Experience hiring and managing news personnel in various positions. 
  • Keen appreciation and respect for the journalistic standards of the PBS News Hour and the industry in general. 
  • Ability to communicate with colleagues in various positions and levels. 
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced newsroom setting and to adjust smoothly to changing assignments under deadline pressure. 
  • Excellent oral and demonstrated writing skills with careful attention to detail. 
  • Excellent organizational, teamwork, project planning and time management skills. 
  • Flexible and able to handle multiple tasks. 
LOCATION
 
WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations.  We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA.  WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible.  Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
