Reports to: Managing editor

Location: Wyoming — Lander, Laramie, Casper, Cheyenne or Jackson preferred.

WyoFile is returning the facts to Wyoming’s civic life with community-supported, nonpartisan, public-interest journalism. To make that happen, we’re looking for an editor to work closely with partner newsrooms around the state to deliver top-notch local-government coverage to the people of Wyoming. What you’ll do:

  • Coordinate and lead collaborations between WyoFile and partner newsrooms around Wyoming.

  • Work with journalists through all stages of story development — from topic selection and story assignment through research, investigation, reporting, copy editing and layout.

  • Adapt WyoFile content for disparate platforms including email newsletter, social media and legacy print outlets and manage its distribution.

  • Work closely with WyoFile’s editorial team to track, report on and respond to assorted performance metrics.

  • Generate and pitch story ideas.

  • Contribute to the evolution and execution of WyoFile’s editorial vision.

What you’ll need to succeed:

  • A talent for managing multi-party relationships for maximum mutual benefit 

  • A passion for teaching, coaching and mentorship

  • Uncompromising news judgment and a nose for a good story

  • Team-oriented leadership style and an appreciation for collaboration

  • Elite organizational skills and a drive to “keep the trains on time”

  • Relentless curiosity, merciless critical thinking, a sharp eye for detail and the ability to digest and make sense of wide-ranging and complex information

  • Exceptional writing, reporting and editorial craft. Expert knowledge of AP style

  • Unimpeachable personal integrity, reliable sense of fairness and dogged commitment to the Society of Professional Journalist code of ethics

  • Passion for the role of civic news organizations in American society

  • Goal orientation, intrinsic motivation and work ethic. Enthusiasm for tackling ambitious, complex initiatives in an entrepreneurial work environment

We’re especially interested in candidates who:

  • Have experience reporting on the institutions of local government

  • Have a successful track record of managing journalists

  • Have an intimate knowledge of Wyoming press corps

  • Appreciate life in the rural West

The details:

Start date: ASAP

Salary range: $70K – $75K depending on experience

Location: Wyoming — Lander, Laramie, Casper, Cheyenne or Jackson preferred, but other Wyoming communities considered. Depending on location, this role could be office-based, home-office-based or a hybrid thereof.
