Job Description

Summary:
NHPR is seeking a Reporter to focus on the issues directly shaping the lives of the state’s kids, teens and their families. That includes stories that examine how people in power address challenges around education funding, childcare, supporting students’ social and emotional health, and more. We want this reporter to think beyond the State House and school board meetings, focusing instead on the daily lives of young people and their families.

Our ideal candidate will have a background in journalism — audio experience is helpful but not required — and will be ready to jump on breaking news as needed. But we are seeking someone who can think beyond the daily news cycle and dig into stories that require deeper, more intentional reporting. We’re looking for a journalist who’s enthusiastic about community engagement, through in-person source-building and digital outreach, to understand what issues matter to kids and families across New Hampshire.

This is a full-time, exempt, hybrid position based in New Hampshire, reporting to a Sr. Editor. This position is covered under our collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The role will be classified as either a Reporter (with a minimum salary of $56,900) or a Senior Reporter (with a minimum salary of $65,300), depending on the chosen applicant’s experience level. We also consider internal equity, among other factors when deciding compensation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Research and produce news stories about education, youth and families for on-air broadcast and digital distribution.
  • Stay up to date on local, regional and national issues affecting education, kids, teens and families, working with your editor to identify opportunities to contextualize issues for NHPR’s audience.
  • Work varied shifts to meet news coverage demands, including breaking news and other appropriate coverage reasons.
  • Participate in station fundraising, live appearances and sponsorship activities.
  • Seek professional development opportunities, with support of managers, and take initiative to learn new skills in reporting, on-air presentation and digital news production.

Job Requirements

Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated news judgment in recognizing the relative importance of a news story and in developing stories.
  • Demonstrated success in building trust with sources to produce original news coverage.
  • Ability to develop creative approaches to human interest coverage and feature stories.
  • Technologically versatile with willingness to expand skills. Multimedia skills, including experience in producing or editing data visualizations, video or other digital media, as well as audio, are desirable.
  • Experience in broadcast journalism, including radio script writing and audio production
  • Experience covering education or other issues affecting young people
  • Ability to represent NHPR standards and code of ethics in interviewing, reporting, and using social media.

We know there are great candidates who may not have all these qualities or who have important skills we may not have outlined above. If this is you, do not hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

Benefits:

NHPR offers a generous benefits package that pays 90 – 100% of health insurance premiums for the employee and 100% of dental and vision insurance premiums for the employee; short—and long-term disability; flexible spending accounts; a 403(b) savings plan and a free on-site fitness center; three weeks of vacation time; twelve paid holidays, two personal days, paid sick leave, and 10 weeks of parental leave.
