Classification: Part-time/hourly; 20 hours/week. Grant funded through June 30, 2025.  

Revision Date: June 2024  

Pay: $30/hour, plus benefits.  

Schedule: Monday-Thursday, ~5 hours a day (time flexible based on editorial schedule and applicant needs)  

Job Location: Remote. Must reside in Arts Midwest’s nine-state region of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, or a Native Nation that shares this geography.

About the Position

Arts Midwest’s Creativity News Desk team is growing! We are looking to hire a Culture Reporter to support our coverage of creativity and culture in the Midwest. This work includes conducting interviews, writing and filing ten 500-word articles every month, setting up stories in Arts Midwest’s website, creating at least two social media reels per month based on stories you are writing, as well supporting other editorial tasks as needed.

 

This is a remote position, with some travel through the year to meet with the Arts Midwest team. This role relies on embracing remote work systems and technology to coordinate tasks, connect with the team, and report on stories.

 

This position is funded through a grant and is only guaranteed through June 30, 2025. We are currently seeking funding to continue this work beyond that date.

 

This work seeks to advance the vision, goals, and impact of the organization and is rooted in Arts Midwest’s commitment to equity, integrity, and learning.

 

About You   

You are passionate about telling stories that highlight Midwestern creativity. You want to celebrate the multifaceted people, cultures, and histories present in this region. You should have a journalism and/or writing background, with at least two years of experience reporting on arts, culture, and community. You love experimentation and enjoy creating content that quickly engages in formats that appeal to general audiences, both in written form and on social media. Good interpersonal skills, cultural competency, thoughtful storytelling skills, and a commitment to DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion, and access) are essential.

Job Requirements

Planning + Setting Vision

  • Assist team in identifying and achieving departmental goals and strategies that align with the organization’s strategic direction. 
  • Share regular reports on task progress and challenges with supervisor.

Content Production

  • Develop, source, and share at least 2-3 new story ideas at weekly editorial meetings.
  • Schedule and conduct interviews for assigned stories in a timely manner.
  • File 2-3 500-word articles for editing weekly; make revisions as needed.
  • Source photographs (including caption and credit information) and other assets for stories.
  • Layout articles for publishing on the Arts Midwest website.
  • Produce and edit at least 2 Instagram Reels per month based on stories you are creating.
  • Assist the Communications team in writing social media copy related to stories.
  • Assist with editorial tasks and projects as needed.

  • Embraces and uses organization’s technology tools and systems to further goals of information transparency and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborates with IT and other function areas to identify systems and training needs.

Physical and Mental Requirements 

Physical effort is light, with lifting or carrying limited to 25 pounds intermittently. Work includes making presentations in front of groups. There is pressure associated with project or activity deadlines. Work will require extended use of a computer keyboard and monitor. Work is performed in a fast-paced environment, where interruptions are frequent.

Working Conditions 

Work is primarily remote, with potentially some travel locally for reporting and regionally to meet with the Arts Midwest editorial team. Assigned and planned travel will be covered by Arts Midwest.
