Job Description

New York Magazine is looking for a creative and enterprising Photo Editor to join our team. The position entails original assignments, production, photo research, and execution of illustrative treatments to support a whole range of stories. The point of view is always clever, unexpected, impactful and always in keeping with New York's voice. The ideal candidate will be passionate about news and current events and will have around three - five years of experience working in editorial. The candidate should be able to either source or assign to meet breaking news, as well as produce longer term thoughtful stories. Must be conscientious, efficient, detail oriented, and work well with colleagues. Strong photoshop skills are essential.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Research images for blog posts for Intelligencer as well as the other sites (when applicable) on deadline. Must have knowledge of all the wire agencies, stock photography sites for quick navigation. Ensuring images are properly licensed; negotiate and handle license agreements
    with photo agencies
  • In-depth image research for longer term features working with all genres of photography from
    photojournalism, portraiture, conceptual, still life, contemporary art, etc.
  • Producing original photo shoots from conception to publication
  • Source images for design team and illustrators when needed, as well as occasional after hours events such as breaking news or other large culture events that will require photo support
  • Optimize images technically and visually for publication on the web: color correction and Siloing
  • Work collaboratively with NYMag teams on special projects
  • Other responsibilities as needed assigned by manager or supervisor

 

WHO YOU ARE

  • At least 3 years of experience in photo editing in media/publishing
  • Must have strong photojournalism experience
  • Fluency with the history of art, and interest in contemporary art
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite software, especially Photoshop. Strong image editing skills in color-correction; selection and compositing, image sizing, batch processing and photo-manipulation are particularly important
  • Strong communication skills and a team player

PAY TRANSPARENCY

The salary range listed below represents the minimum and maximum base pay for this position at the time of this posting. Final salary offered to the candidate selected for the position will be based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience.
