Job Description

North Carolina Reporter

Inside Climate News is seeking an experienced North Carolina-based reporter to cover climate change, related environmental issues and environmental justice in the Tar Heel state.

The successful applicant for this position will produce a body of news and feature stories, and longer form accountability, investigative and narrative pieces that address climate change and all of its impacts on heat, extreme weather, flooding, drought, sea level rise and the environment, especially air and groundwater pollution and land use issues related to fossil fuels. Issues of particular interest include Superfund and coal ash remediation, coastal adaptation and resilience, concentrated animal feeding operations, renewable energy, Duke Energy, pipelines, environmental regulation and environmental justice. This journalist will report remotely, and travel extensively throughout North Carolina, from their base within the state.

Inside Climate News is committed to diversity and inclusion in our newsroom so that we may best serve the varied global community. We strongly encourage women, people of color, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ candidates and veterans to apply.

Job Description

This is a demanding position that requires sound beat and investigative skills,  as well as advanced writing craft. A facility with government documents and court records is expected, as is a demonstrated commitment to reporting on the environment and environmental justice. Basic data analysis skills would be considered a significant plus, as would fluency in Spanish.
