Endowed Chair at FAMU School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC)
The School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC) at Florida A&M University is seeking exceptional candidates with a quality professional reputation in journalism for an endowed chair. The successful candidate will be a leader in advancing journalism and innovation at the school, extending the impact of information and digital media, and enhancing inclusive media efforts. The endowed chair is a full-time, nine-month faculty position with tenure, subject to all applicable policies of the School and University.

ABOUT SJGC and FAMU
 
The School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJCG) at Florida A&M University (FAMU) is one of the leading HBCU journalism and mass communications programs in the country. Founded in 1982, it is the first program of its kind at a historically black university to receive national accreditation. With a focus on academic excellence and experiential learning, SJGC is preparing students to be confident communicators and leaders who can meet the demands of a competitive and evolving media marketplace. The school has two Divisions: Journalism and Graphic Communication, and three (3) degree programs: journalism, public relations and graphic design.
 
FAMU is ranked the No. 1 public historically Black university in the nation and part of the State University System of Florida. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. POSITION SUMMARY
 
The endowed chair is a distinguished professional with a modern skill set and a demonstrated desire to, and a record of accomplishment for, maintaining relevance in the field. She/he/they will train students to responsibly produce and publish inclusive stories with confidence and authority.
 
The chair will facilitate students’ fluency in digital media, community engagement, analysis and research to meet the demands of today’s job market; collaborate with media companies and journalism organizations to provide professional development opportunities to students; and network with alumni, media professionals, journalism groups and partners.
 
The chair will teach undergraduate courses and conduct seminars in the fall and spring and collaborate with other academic units and institutions on storytelling and innovation projects. The chair will be encouraged to author thought-leadership pieces and scholarship that enlightens on issues of inclusion, identity, equity and pertinent matters related to media.
 

Job Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Teach one to two courses per semester (fall and spring).
  • Convene/conduct seminars and summits on inclusive journalism, storytelling and/or innovation.
  • Host speakers who are prominent and rising storytellers, journalists, and scholars.  
  • Leverage professional network to connect students to internships and job opportunities.
  • Monitor and gauge media trends; remain current on developments in industry and higher education.
  • Engage and collaborate with media and academic partners on research and initiatives.
  • Fulfill standard faculty requirements for teaching, research/creative works and service.
  • Represent the School and University at meetings, events, functions and conferences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Advanced degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, Communications, Digital Media or related fields.
  • At least 10 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in journalism and mass communications.
  • Demonstrated experience working in multicultural environments or with diverse groups.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Active in the profession with a national or international standing.
  • Distinguished themselves with publications, creative/professional works and or industry contributions.
  • Experience in newsroom management or leadership in professional organizations.
  • Teaching, lecture and/or training experience.
