Job Description

The University of Memphis Department of Journalism & Strategic Media invites applications for the full-time, nine-month Helen and Jabie Hardin Chair of Excellence in Economics/Managerial Journalism to begin in January 2024. The accomplishments of candidates for this position must reflect their commitment to working with an inclusive student population and their ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural academic goals of the university.
 
The ideal candidate will have robust professional experience in the journalism industry with a reputation as a leader. Experience may include reporting, editing, management, opinion writing, investigation, public service, or other areas in the newsroom. Candidate experience can include work in print, broadcast, cable, or online settings. Evidence of success, such as winning awards or supervising winners of awards, should be noted in the application. The Chair of Excellence brings high visibility to the university, and thus, should demonstrate a dynamic profile in their work.
 
The successful candidate will become an active member of the faculty in Journalism & Strategic Media and will participate in the broader faculty governance of the university. The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses based on the candidate’s area of expertise and department needs, with two courses taught in both the fall and spring semesters. The Chair of Excellence is expected to maintain an active involvement with the Memphis community, including the civic community, the journalism community, and the university community. The Chair of Excellence engages the public as a media and journalism expert and as a source for local news outlets. The Chair of Excellence also serves as a key collaborator with the university’s Institute for Public Service Reporting, including service on its editorial advisory board and support of its staff.
The position offers relocation support and a three-year, renewable contract.

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism/mass communication or a related field.
  • 10 years of work in the media industry, including in leadership positions. 
Preferred qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in journalism/mass communication or a related field.
  • 15 years of work in the media industry, including in leadership positions.
  • Teaching experience at the university level.
  • Evidence of community engagement and involvement.
