Job Description
JOB PURPOSE: Reporting to the Executive Director, the Assistant Director of Journalism Education will serve as a key member of the Center for Journalism and Democracy (the Center) staff and will ensure that programs offered by the Center fulfill its mission: To bolster the field of journalism in service of our multiracial democracy by supporting the teaching and practice of historically informed investigative reporting at Howard University and across the constellation of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The Center provides academic and financial support to students, faculty and news organizations located at Howard University and the nation’s largest journalism programs located at HBCUs. SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY: Responsible for providing limited supervision for one or more functions within a department. Formally plans, assigns, directs, and coordinates the work of these functions. Typically, responsible for performing some non-supervisory duties in addition to supervisory responsibilities. May perform staff evaluations and make recommendations regarding pay and/or performance. NATURE AND SCOPE: Internal contacts include executives, administrators, faculty, students, and staff of the university at large. External contacts include alumni, consultants, representatives from other colleges and universities, visitors, and the general public. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Provide vision, oversight and leadership in planning and development of the Center’s academic programs
Lead day to day management of the journalism education programs team
Collaborate with journalism professors to design courses for the investigative journalism concentration and ensure program learning outcomes are embedded throughout the courses
Lead recruitment efforts for the visiting professorship program
Collaborate with journalism faculty to provide training, skills building, and other support for investigative reporting courses
Build out the structure of and maintain academic partnerships between Howard University and partner HBCUs
Collaborate with staff and faculty of Howard University’s TruthBeTold news fact-checking initiative to bolster and subsequently expand it to other HBCUs
Contribute to the implementation of the Center’s strategic initiatives
Research and develop new academic courses and programs in line with the Center’s mission, inclusive of cross-campus and online courses
Evaluate academic programming offered by Center
Support faculty involved with the Center
Build and maintain professional working relationships with University community members and other community partners
Collaborate with online and instructional design teams to design and implement learning projects
Foster an inclusive and productive team culture
Perform other related duties as assigned
CORE COMPETENCIES:
Master’s degree in journalism or equivalent with a combination of education and progressive experience leading, developing and directing instructional and experiential programs rooted in journalistic concepts, practices, and procedures
5+ years experience with at least 2 years in a supervisory role
Ability to both create and work within established frameworks, policies, and practices
Strong strategic thinking and project management skills
Ability to interact at the most senior levels of an organization and to work collaboratively across functions, levels, and departments towards shared objectives
Experience developing or teaching academic courses and workshops
Ability to provide and receive direct and constructive feedback
Passion for and familiarity with HBCU student populations and culture
Experience navigating policy requirements at an academic institution
PREFERRED SKILLS:
Expertise in coordinating cross-institutional academic partnerships
Experience in executing learning projects on online and virtual platforms
