Washingtonian magazine, located in Washington, DC, is currently seeking a motivated and talented full time Assistant Photo Editor to join our art team. The ideal candidate will have the chance to make an impact on our award-winning suite of publications: Washingtonian magazine, Washingtonian Weddings and our Custom Media editions. Our work is currently hybrid.
Responsibilities include:
-Extensive and creative photo research for front and back of book and feature stories as needed
-Commissioning and producing photography for the magazine including portrait, still life and reportage
-Clearing rights and permissions for all images and talent, as necessary
-Gathering credit and caption information
-Working with design/production teams during the proofing process to submit images for color and retouching
-Sourcing and pitching new photographers, artists and photo essay ideas
-Processing invoices and keeping track of budgets
-Opportunities for shooting editorial stories for print and/or web
-Any other administrative duties that may be required from time to time relevant to the roleTips: Provide a summary of the role, what success in the position looks like, and how this role fits into the organization overall.
Qualifications:
-BA or BS degree required and 1 year professional experience in stock photography, photojournalism, or photo editing for a magazine, newspaper, or picture agency field
-VERY strong multitasking and organizational skills while using initiative and being proactive
-Knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, InCopy and InDesign
-Have an understanding of call sheets, usage rights and confidence in negotiating image fees
-Ability to work independently in a fast paced, deadline driven environment, a keen eye for detail
-Excellent communication skills and can communicate your ideas in a lively, collaborative environment
-Knowledge of copyrights, licenses and permissions is a plus
-A love of photography is required. Being a photographer is a plus.
