Location: Washington/New York/LA, District of Columbia, United States
Job Category: Online | New Media
Salary: Competitive per year
It’s an exciting time to be part of the BBC News team in North America. We are expanding and we want you to help us improve our coverage of this critical region and reach new audiences in our two biggest markets outside the UK.
The size of the digital team across Washington, New York, LA and Toronto is more than doubling to 40 journalists. There will be more writers, editors and specialist reporters as well as new hubs focused on production, visual journalism and growing our audience.
Help us shape the BBC’s daily coverage and showcase the best of our global journalism by applying for one of the new digital home page editor positions in the US.
We want to provide the best breaking news coverage of major events in North America as well as more original reporting and innovative digital storytelling. Our readers want a richer global perspective on both US and international news.
Having an experienced home page editor as a senior member of the daily news team will be crucial, someone who knows how to make news writing really sparkle and who can curate our content to showcase the BBC’s best journalism from around the world. You’ll know how to use audience data to inform your decision making, will think visually and have the judgement and confidence to make creative editorial choices.
BBC News is committed to creating a more diverse, inclusive and agile organisation that responds quickly to changing audience needs, provides you with exceptional career opportunities, and strengthens our position as a trusted, impartial, world leading news organisation.
A senior journalist on the digital news team will be called upon to curate the front page of the North America edition of the BBC News website as well as the international app. You will have to make swift judgements about what content to promote, using data to back up decisions in line with our audience targets. And you will write sharp and engaging push notifications to break major news and promote our most distinctive stories.
You will be expected to also write, edit, sub and commission stories from the US and Canada. The role has many aspects: it could focus on monitoring the news, generating ideas for coverage and helping set the daily agenda. It involves writing the biggest news of the day, getting involved with reporting, generating ideas and devising the best formats to tell our biggest stories.
You will help direct a team of digital writers and video journalists. And in a dynamic multi-media newsroom, you will work with colleagues from TV, radio and the BBC’s many language services to make their journalism work for digital audiences. An understanding of how search and social trends and audience data improve our journalism will be part of the job.
Are you the right candidate?

In-depth knowledge of data analytics and experience of using them to shape our journalism to meet the needs of different audience groups
Demonstrable knowledge of US, Canada and world affairs and the ability to generate a clear editorial plan for digital coverage of major breaking news
Experience of commissioning, editing, structuring and writing sharp, engaging news in a range of digital formats and generating ideas to reach wider audiences
The ability to explain the world to a US audience, and reflect the different perspectives of American and international audiences
Deadline for applications June 26. Please note this is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in the US (US citizenship, Green Card or work authorisation).
