Job Description

Washingtonian is seeking a creative, hardworking journalist with experience in writing and editing articles and packages on consumer-service subjects such as travel, finance, health, fitness, and recreation. This person should have a passion for producing articles that are interesting, lively, and informative—and are the kinds of pieces that readers save and refer back to. This person should be curious and always open to new ideas, and have an interest in planning smart, surprising coverage. This person should also have a healthy dose of skepticism so that articles dig deep no matter the topic and offer unbiased, fair, knowledgeable, well-reported, and insightful advice. The ideal candidate would have an understanding of Washington and how it works, and would also have experience putting together survey-based lists such as top doctors, top financial planners, and top dentists.

What the job entails:

* Conceive, plan, and assign/write/edit assorted consumer-service-driven articles and packages for both print and online.
* Produce annual “top” lists such as top financial planners, top doctors, top dentists, and great places to work.
* Work with staff/freelance writers with varying levels of experience through all phases of a story, from idea generation to reporting to writing and revising.
* Collaborating with art and digital teams.
* Ideas, ideas, and more ideas.
* Occasional editing for the website.
* Collaborating with the magazine’s other editors to suggest and brainstorm stories—whether for online or print—and pitching in on large cover packages when needed.

* Other one-off responsibilities as designated by the editor-in-chief.

What you’d bring:

* Minimum of 3-5 years experience writing and editing.
* Experience writing or editing articles with a consumer-oriented bent.
* The ability to multi-task and juggle big projects, along with a respect for deadlines.
* Ideally, actual experience producing “best professionals” lists such as top doctors, and in conducting surveys.
* An understanding and appreciation of city and regional magazines.
* Applicants must live in the DC/MD/VA area or be willing to relocate.

How to apply: Please send your cover letter, résumé, salary requirements, and 5 “consumer service” clips you have written and/or edited (the clips should be hyperlinked or in a PDF format), to Sherri Dalphonse at lifestyleeditor@washingtonian.com.
