Job Description

The American Press Institute is hiring an Editorial Associate to contribute to and further develop its writing and editing efforts.

API leads and inspires innovation in the news industry, in part through a variety of written products overseen by the Editorial Associate.

You will have the opportunity to identify and communicate the best insights every day in our Need to Know newsletter, read by thousands of the most influential leaders in journalism. The Editorial Associate coordinates with and will work alongside a small team of freelancers that curates this daily newsletter that features insights from across the industry as well as API.

You will participate in and help execute our audience research that asks groundbreaking questions about news consumers. You will also help identify, solicit writers for and edit practical pieces and resources (exampleexample and example) on important issues like trust, analytics, subscription revenue and more. We also do Q&As and essay collections to feature innovative voices, including those in API programs, and we can experiment with videos, quizzes, GIFs and anything else that might help people learn and understand helpful insights. So bring your energy and creativity.

Excellent writing and editing skills are a must. Candidates must know how to craft a concise sentence, a clever transition and an engaging headline. You also must show fundamental skills in copy editing and grammar.

We’re looking for people who already closely follow the news industry or digital media — trends, innovations, experiments, emerging business models and more. Candidates will benefit from a working knowledge of those things and a bottomless hunger for learning and spreading new ideas.

Candidates should have some experience in or exposure to journalism, but creativity, writing and editing skills, fluency in digital media, and interest in problem solving and transformation are most important. An awareness of other people or organizations like API that help improve journalism or its business would also help, but so too would lived experience or knowledge of another type of work beyond journalism that journalists could learn from. At API, we believe potential solutions to news organizations’ challenges won’t come from only other news organizations or people currently in the field.

The Editorial Associate plays a central role in increasing API’s reach and providing insights for news organizations of all kinds, many of which are current or future participants in API programs. This position reports to the Director of Strategic Partnerships & Research and will have visibility with other Directors and staff that run core API programs.

What You’ll Do

  • Learn and become a main curator for the daily Need to Know newsletter that surfaces new and useful insights to help people do more innovative and sustainable journalism.
  • Collaborate with freelancers that also support the curation of Need to Know, acting as a main point of contact and interfacing with the team on any planned API resource promotion
  • Grow into the role of editor of the Need to Know newsletter
  • Manage web production of in-depth research reports, strategy studies, blog posts and Q&As for API’s website.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Strategic Partnerships & other Directors to identify, solicit writers for and/or edit or draft Q&As or practical pieces that share insights from or complement existing API programs.
  • Contribute your ideas on journalism and better serving communities to help serve all areas of API, especially research and programming.
  • Experiment with finding new ways to convey and resurface insights from API editorial products, such as serial emails, Zoom discussions on focused topics, or lightning chats based on reports or other resources
  • Engage and learn from other API staff on a handful of program-specific API editorial products and partnerships, such as and a podcast partnership with It’s All Journalism
  • Help share API editorial products and resources on social media as part of larger social media strategy
  • Contribute to a workplace of inclusion and belonging

Job Requirements

Who You Are

  • You are insatiably curious about how people perceive and consume journalism, and how news organizations can better serve people.
  • You know news organizations must also be sustainable, and are a believer that news organizations need both good journalism and sustainable business models.
  • You care about personal and intellectual humility, knowing there is always more to learn and that journalists can learn from their peers, current audiences, people who distrust them and experts in or outside of journalism.
  • You value collaborating on ideas and angles to pieces, recognizing that a diversity of perspectives improves the final product from the outset as well as in the editing process.
  • You’re comfortable working independently and taking initiative, but at the same time appreciate being on a team and identifying ways your role and skillsets can support the goals of colleagues in their programs.
  • You are a strategic thinker who sets goals and likes exploring how different editorial projects may help API reach new or desired audiences.
  • You have about 3 years of relevant experience as a student and/or professional working in journalism, at any kind of publication or platform big or small. Any specific experience in editing, web producing or newsletter writing is helpful.
  • You have a strong grasp of or intuition for current issues affecting the news industry — and know where to look to find answers for questions that come up.
  • You have strong digital media skills, most likely experience with WordPress, MailChimp, and graphic design software.
  • You have outstanding writing and editing skills, grammatical knowledge, and interpersonal skills, and are a self-motivator and innovator.
  • You have a demonstrated passion for journalism, a history of immersing yourself in new ideas and finding creative solutions, and enthusiasm for communicating best practices and insights that help other journalists learn and grow.
