Job Description

Lead a small team in coverage that will reveal how federal dollars are being used in Washington state communities, with a focus on local impacts and attention to inequities and improprieties in the allocation of those dollars. This editor will be expected to operate with a high degree of independence while also being capable of collaborating with fellow managers and multimedia journalists to deliver impactful journalism to a large and varied audience.  

Salary Range: $68,000-$77,000

The Investigations Editor is a newsroom leader seasoned in public-interest journalism who will work directly with a staff reporter and with the support of other newsroom staff to identify local impacts of federal spending throughout the state of Washington. Together, this team will investigate the allocation of dollars for COVID relief, as well as funds targeted toward infrastructure. The Investigations Editor will lead their team in explaining to Crosscut’s audience how these funds are allocated and explore the changes facilitated by this money. This team will also serve a watchdog function, identifying improprieties and inequities in how these funds are distributed.

  1. Develop the overall approach to topic area, including, but not limited to, coverage goals, a comprehensive story plan and timeline for deliverables.
  2. Work with a designated staff reporter and independent contractors to produce investigative stories and community impact profiles. 
  3. Edit all text associated with the coverage area.  
  4. Oversee and assist in identifying and procuring public records. 
  5. Collaborate with other managers to help produce accompanying photography and other multimedia assets. 
  6. Work with internal audience engagement team to amplify and engage with Crosscut’s growing digital audiences throughout the year.
  7. Identify potential contributing journalists who could work as independent contractors.
  8. Ensure that all reporting meets journalistic and organizational standards for fairness, thoroughness and quality.
  9. Develop a network of contacts in the communities being covered that can help identify compelling issues that are not currently being adequately covered by other media outlets.
  10. Manage the project budget, including costs for talent, materials and records requests. 
  11. Take part in meetings with other newsroom managers to identify and address issues that impact newsroom operations and culture. 
  12. Assist in researching and applying for appropriate journalism contests related to the work.
  13. Identify potential republishing partners and conduct outreach to encourage republication of the stories and other media from this project.
  14. Work with the managing editor to prepare grant requests for continuing Crosscut’s investigative work.
  15. Represent Crosscut and Cascade Public Media at community and partner events, industry gatherings and in other formal settings.

Job Requirements


  1. Bachelor’s Degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications, new media, business, or a  related field or equivalent experience required.
  2. At least six years of experience as a writer or editor in a deadline-oriented environment; local news/politics-related preferred.
  3. Experience with filing public records requests and working with data.
  4. At least four years of experience managing editorial staffers; local news/politics-related preferred.
  5. Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with peers; significant experience organizing and managing multiple priorities, and in developing and managing projects.
  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  7. Excellent interpersonal skills for building and fostering key internal and external relationships, as well as the ability to mentor less experienced employees.
  8. Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment. 
  9. Deep understanding of journalism ethics and practices, with nonprofit or public media experience preferred. 
  10. Experience with digital media platforms, multimedia storytelling tools and techniques and social media.
