The Pulitzer Center is seeking a great Rainforest Journalism Fund Manager to lead this dynamic, global initiative. The Rainforest Journalism Fund supports engagement with global environmental issues through journalism related to tropical rainforests across the greater Amazon, Congo Basin, and Southeast Asia regions. This support takes the form of reporting grants; capacity building and networking opportunities for journalists; and communication and outreach initiatives to promote the quality, independent journalism produced by our grantees.
This position also offers the opportunity to contribute to a nimble, rapidly growing organization in journalism, civic engagement, and educational spaces in partnership with staff across five continents. This role involves managing an international team of three coordinators, an editorial assistant and an intern.
The Pulitzer Center is a nonprofit organization that supports the development of independent, quality journalism worldwide with an ambitious network of educational partnerships at the K-12 and college levels. We support nearly 200 reporting projects a year, working in partnership with dozens of media outlets worldwide, hundreds of secondary and middle schools, and a Campus Consortium network of 35-plus universities, community colleges, and historically Black colleges and universities.
Oversee negotiations and create and send contract agreements for 40+ RJF projects across three regional initiatives (Amazon, Congo Basin, and Southeast Asia).
Oversee proposal review processes involving three regional coordinators and advisory committees and ensure that grants awarded respond to underreported environmental issues, demonstrate cultural sensitivity, and meet other program objectives.
Along with regional coordinators, maintain a strong working relationship with grantees and media outlets and seek to recruit project proposals from a pool of journalists that reflects the diversity of experience and perspective we aim to support.
Participate in weekly (and other) check-ins with the three regional coordinators, editorial assistant, and intern.
Lead the implementation and evaluation of four (virtual or in-person) workshops for grantees each year in each key region in partnership with regional coordinators.
Oversee implementation of annual HEFAT course opportunities for 20+ grantees.
Manage the Pulitzer Center’s relationship with its valued Rainforest Journalism Fund Regional Advisory Committees.
Support development of communications strategy for promoting RJF projects and opportunities in collaboration with the RJF Assistant.
Manage paperwork pertaining to journalism project grant contracts and payments, ensuring the timely submission and processing of dozens of transactions each month.
Track project deliverables and ensure timely republication on the Rainforest Journalism Fund website with support from the RJF assistant and regional coordinators.
Track, analyze, and report on progress toward RJF yearly goals using results framework agreed to with initiative funder.
Work with the finance team in order to provide timely and accurate reports on RJF budget and actual spending.
Cross-team collaborations (20%)
Identify opportunities for collaboration or support between RJF and its sister initiative, Rainforest Investigations Network (RIN), including outreach and educational opportunities with relevant staff.
Contribute to improvements of the Rainforest Journalism Fund website by working with the RJF assistant and communications team.
Provide technical support/substantive input where needed for funding proposals or in editorial project review processes.
Support the assessment and improvement of organizational processes (including financial, IT, DEI, and other practices and policies).
Uphold and promote the Pulitzer Center’s commitments to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in managing the Rainforest Journalism Fund and participating in other efforts aimed at achieving the Center’s mission.
Represent RJF or the Pulitzer Center at relevant conferences, meetings, and events.
Support the Pulitzer Center’s K-12 and Outreach teams in the development of educational materials and public events that help extend the impact and visibility of RJF-funded projects and grantees.
A bachelor’s or other undergraduate degree and five (5) years of professional experience (at least two years in a project management role, ideally in a nonprofit organization or media environment)
A passion for global issues and a commitment to the Pulitzer Center’s mission
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize and execute multiple priorities with the support of team members
The ability to work independently and collaboratively, depending on a particular project
Fluency in English and have professional proficiency in at least one of the following key languages: bahasa Indonesia, French, Portuguese, Spanish
Commitment to centering equity in all aspects of the work
Demonstrated understanding of and interest in issues and trends linked to the world’s tropical rainforests, such as climate change, deforestation, Indigenous and traditional communities, etc.
Experience working across time zones, cultures and languages, especially in the context of the greater Amazon, Congo Basin, and Southeast Asia regions
Familiarity with productivity tools such as Slack and Trello, project and administrative management tools such as Salesforce, application management programs such as Submittable and FormAssembly, and virtual communication platforms such as ZOOM
This position is fully remote and requires some travel to fulfill RJF deliverables.
