Cornerstone Public Affairs opened its doors in 2017 to integrate with the existing government relations services and is based out of Washington, D.C. and Des Moines, Iowa. We are a group of senior professionals with diverse experience in public relations, business, media, and government. Our team helps our clients anticipate and navigate the complexities that occur at the intersection of policy, politics, and public perception to achieve their desired objectives. We provide bespoke counsel, develop, and implement thoughtful communications strategies, advise on messaging and reputation management, overcome crises, and assist in building long-term engagement plans.
SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE Cornerstone seeks a full-time, team-oriented individual to join our Public Affairs team. Cornerstone will give preference to candidates with on-the-record business journalism experience.
As a Public Affairs Principal, the candidate will serve as team lead for various clients as well as launch communications initiatives on behalf of clients. The ability to be a self-starter, manage multiple projects at once, interface with C-Suite-level clients, work within a tight deadline, and demonstrate strong writing and organizational capabilities is essential.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Building and maintaining relationships with reporters and newsrooms across various media markets, beats, coverages, and mediums;
Candidates with extensive networks and newsroom relationships will be given preference;
Directing and executing effective and creative strategies to enhance media visibility and pitching stories using existing and new media relationships;
Assisting with existing Cornerstone client relationships;
Responding to clients’ needs for increased advocacy, earned media, and corporate strategy in digital platforms;
Generating and creating content in many forms on the client’s behalf, including but not limited to press releases, op-eds, blog posts, collateral, social media content, memos, reports, proposals, action summaries, etc.;
Developing and executing strategic media and public affairs plans for clients across a wide variety of industries with the ability to use metrics to gauge success;
Copy writing on a wide variety of issues;
Sourcing and managing external creative and research needs for clients; and
Lead business development initiatives.
COMPETENCIES The Principal position is one of high-visibility and requires strong communication and organizational skills. The candidate must maintain the highest level of integrity and lead by example in all areas. The ideal candidate for this position is highly motivated and results driven. They must possess strong leadership skills and excel at strategic thinking. They must be open to new perspectives and willing to adapt to a fast-paced established environment. Proven ability to operate effectively as a team leader and team player who works effectively with peers, has excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a positive, pro-active, and professional attitude and approach are crucial qualifications.
Key Requirements The ideal candidate for this position must have 10 years of experience as a journalist for a national outlet. Preference will be given to reporters covering business in online/print publications; however, radio and TV reporters are also encouraged to apply.
The Candidate must understand the public affairs business unit, demonstrate excellent writing, editing, and organizational capabilities, interface with clients, and help drive business development initiatives. Strong content creation capabilities are essential. An ideal candidate should be able to display previous news coverage and have a deep network of reporters throughout various newsrooms.
