Job Description

The Pulitzer Center’s Copy Editor Assistant is responsible for collaborating with the publishing manager while helping oversee the workflow and copy review process for all content published to the Pulitzer Center website. This includes republishing external news stories supported by the Pulitzer Center, original news stories, author bios, events, updates, and landing pages. The assistant copy editor will help ensure that all copy adheres to the standards defined in the Center’s style guide, and that all content is published in a timely manner and tagged appropriately. The assistant is a part of the Pulitzer Center’s Editorial team and reports to the publishing manager.
Major Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Attending daily publishing meeting with publishing manager, editorial coordinator, and interns, deciding on publication priorities
  • Helping provide direction and advice to interns building externals about the production and copy editing process
  • Reviewing copy on externals, internals, updates, events, email newsletters, quarterly and annual reports, etc. as needed
  • Taking final look at externals, checking that authors, project, publication link, and additional tags are correct
  • While working with publishing manager, help make decisions on changes to headlines, captions, and body content on externals when original publication does not adhere to Center editorial standards
  • Helping to maintain Pulitzer Center style guide and helping to train staff on editing content for style

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field
  • 1-2 years of copyediting and web publishing experience
  • Command of AP style
  • Excellent English writing and editing skills
  • A sharp eye for details
  • Collaborative disposition and ability to work across teams
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity to work effectively with journalists from around the world
Fluency in Spanish, Portuguese or French is a big plus.
Location: remote work is allowed.
