Candidates should have at least two years of reporting experience, preferably involving government. Daily reporting experience is a plus. Candidates should be able to balance handling anywhere from one to four stories per day while also producing enterprise stories. They also need to balance generating their own story ideas with those assigned to them.
Passion for reporting on politics, government and policy is a must, as is a commitment to accuracy.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate the ability to build sources and recognize the importance of meeting deadlines, particularly when it comes to quickly pushing out accurate breaking news. Candidates also should possess an understanding of how to use social media to help their stories reach a greater audience.
Staff writers edit stories. Candidates need to demonstrate an ability to handle basic editing responsibilities.
Most work will take place in downtown Lansing. However, reporters are occasionally assigned to events that require driving to different parts of Michigan.
