Job Description

Location: Remote within the contiguous United States - A remote work opportunity (outside of Indiana or the D.C. metro area) could require, on average, three to five days in the Indianapolis office per month with additional presence as needed.

Compensation: $78k - $98k annually (final pay commensurate with experience)

Purpose

The Audience Engagement Editor is a skilled writer, editor, and data-driven professional who can thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. We are looking for a storyteller who can foster lively social and digital media engagement. We want to share and talk about our ideas with influential online audiences whose support is essential to creating better learning experiences for today’s college students and adults in training programs. We highlight the nation’s need to do more to educate today’s students, who often are Black, Hispanic, Latino, and Native American, ensuring their perspectives are prominent in all that we do. We work to ensure that grantees, contractors, and audiences are racially and ethnically diverse, reflecting our society and the students whose interests we advocate.
 
The Role
  • Commitment to Racial Equity: The Audience Engagement Editor will help us advance Lumina’s commitment to ending systemic racism and barriers to learning beyond high school for Black, Hispanic, Latino, and Native American adults. The editor will promote racial and ethnic diversity and inclusion in hiring, contracting, grantmaking, and decision making, and will pursue fair and just outcomes through Lumina’s work. The editor will share Lumina’s commitment to racial justice and equity with external partners
  • Strategy Development and Leadership: The editor will be responsible for working with internal teams and external consultants to develop, budget, and tactically deploy an online outreach strategy across channels such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Google, and Medium while responding thoughtfully to rapidly changing digital and social landscapes. Success will require comfort and facility using the wealth of data these platforms generate and audience, public narrative, and storytelling research to ensure smart targeting, cost-efficient results, and internal support for approaches. The editor will make recommendations to the strategy director about the design, development, and testing of approaches. The editor will draw lessons from past or current work to shape and inform new work. The editor will contribute to the Strategic Communications team by sharing informed thinking and new ideas, supporting colleagues, and accepting assignments.
  • Fluency with Our Work and Our Storytelling: The editor should enjoy following breaking news, blog and opinion sites, and in-depth journalism related to education and framing the takeaways in real-time with engaging headlines and writing that support Lumina’s mission of making opportunities for learning beyond high school available to all. Often, the editor must simplify complex topics and describe them clearly and in enough detail for audiences to grasp their meaning and significance. We strive for a 10th-grade reading level. Success will require developing fluency across issues related to economic opportunity and social mobility and drawing related insights from the work Lumina supports. Other responsibilities include writing and editing 500- to 1,500-word blog posts and op-ed pieces, participating in online conversations, managing outside firms’ digital and social outreach, repackaging and resurfacing editorial content, analyzing audience trends and performance metrics, overseeing video storytelling, and assisting the Director of Media Strategy with blog and video news release packages. 
  • Integration and Collaboration: Collaborate in an intentional and forward-thinking way with colleagues across the organization to be good stewards of Lumina’s charitable resources. Examples include collaboratively developing metrics and targets to ensure our work produces results and identifying storytelling opportunities. The editor should regularly seek the strategy director’s advice and support..
  •  Grant and Contract Administration: The editor negotiates and manages outside contracts with agencies that provide strategic advice, track success, and develop creative content such as animated explainer videos, video storytelling, and podcasts. There also are opportunities to work directly as a program officer with nonprofit and public media organizations that Lumina supports, managing grants through their lifecycle, addressing questions and concerns, and sharing information with the strategy director whenever necessary to support the work of Strategic Communications.

Job Requirements

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public affairs, communications, public relations, or liberal arts or equivalent education and experience.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in journalism, public relations, corporate or nonprofit communications, or public affairs. Demonstrated writing ability and prior experience reaching digital and social media audiences required. Experience in journalism preferred. Familiarity with areas such as the broad landscape of education and training beyond high school, economics, public policy, and philanthropy are pluses.

  • Ability to demonstrate how best to use the foundation’s resources to ensure the policies and practices envisioned in the current Strategic Plan are aligned with Lumina’s principles of learning and credentialing.

  • Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate accurately, effectively, and in ways appropriate to different audiences.
  • Strong writer, with the ability to review, revise and synthesize a variety of information and help connect the Foundation’s work to broader discussions within the higher education landscape.
  • Ability to manage internal and external constituents, projects, and budgets.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and research abilities and an ability to coordinate with researchers and program evaluators.
  • Capable of applying adaptive problem-solving skills in response to unforeseen challenges and new assignments.
  • Ability to prioritize a wide range of duties and responsibilities, organize tasks, and remain flexible to changing and multiple requests.
  • Ability to work collegially and diplomatically across the organization and audience groups, with an ability to resolve any conflicts.
  • Exercise sound judgment in handling sensitive or confidential information.
  • Ability to use technology effectively, including databases, spreadsheets, Microsoft Office 365 products such as Outlook and Word, Salesforce, WebEx and Yammer.
 Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Work is performed is mostly sedentary.
  • Visual and auditory acuity for extensive use of various forms of technology.
  • Currently Lumina staff are not traveling. When travel resumes- this position travels 10-20%, including overnight stays.
