Job Description

Boston University’s College of Communication invites applications for three non-tenure track positions – two at the associate professor rank, one at the professor rank. All will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in journalism. We seek colleagues committed to the highest standards of journalism as well as an interest in the innovations necessary in the digital age.
                The Boston University Department of Journalism, is a comprehensive program that offers instruction in all media platforms. The department and the university are committed to fostering a diverse university community within a supportive and respectful environment. We believe that the diversity of our faculty, students, and staff is e­ssential to our success as a leading research university and is an integral component of institutional excellence.
                Successful candidates for these positions must have experience in a complex media organization as well as strong experience in and an abiding commitment to promoting an inclusive and diverse educational environment.
                We seek three colleagues able to teach the department’s core courses and specialized courses in one of these subject areas:
 
  • Investigative Journalism
  • Impact Journalism
  • Science Journalism 
 
The associate professor in investigative journalism will help students build on our courses in data journalism and depth reporting to work on projects in partnership with Greater Boston’s media outlets. A track record in investigative reporting is required and experience in data visualization is desirable.
The associate professor in impact journalism will guide students through the creation of storytelling projects devoted to social justice, race relations, climate change and other key issues. The department partners on projects with the university’s Center for Antiracist Research, the School of Publish Health, the Institute for Sustainable Energy, and other entities. We are investigating the creation of a cross-department Center for Impact Communication, focused on critical concerns. The successful applicant must have a distinguished record in long-form storytelling and a desire to build partnerships across the university.
The professor in science journalism will help students build explanatory narratives in all aspects of science and medical reporting.  The successful applicant must have a distinguished record in long-form storytelling, and a desire to continue building partnerships with other aspects of the university and the city’s community of scientists.
 
        Successful candidates for all positions should share the following qualities:
 
  • A record of sustained excellence.
  • Eligibility for appointment at the associate professor or professor level at Boston University. See link here.
  • A master’s degree is preferred; a doctorate is desirable but not required. Applicants with bachelor’s degrees and significant professional experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated accomplishments in promoting diversity and inclusion in an organization.
