POSITION DESCRIPTION Rewire News Group is hiring a social media editor to help us expand our inspired and interactive online community, and increase awareness, readership, and sharing of our work at this critical time for reproductive rights, health, and justice. Our ideal candidate is a voracious news consumer and expert in social media best practices who is tuned into conversations happening on all social platforms, is able to spot content trends as they are happening, can capitalize on breaking news moments, and works well under pressure and collaboratively as part of a team. As part of our editorial team, the social media editor will create, edit, produce, and promote digital content, including Twitter threads, Instagram posts, and related work. The ideal candidate will have previous experience in journalism or a similar space; a strong working knowledge of reproductive rights, health, and justice issues; thrive in a fast-paced news-centric environment; and is a self-starter who can function both independently and as part of the broader team. This role reports to our Senior Editor, Law and Policy.
Preference will be given to applicants well-versed in both social media strategy in a newsroom setting and the issues we cover, who are creative and detail-oriented, committed to evidence-based journalism, and able to move swiftly in a fast-paced environment.
The Social Media Editor will:
Monitor and respond to breaking news moments in our issue spaces across all social platforms;
Work in conjunction with the Senior Editor, Law and Policy, to develop and execute a social media strategy that drives to growth and engagement goals;
Manage/create and increase our presence and profile on social channels through creating original content, sharing RNG archive work, and community engagement;
Work in conjunction with Executive Editor and Senior Editors to curate, conceive, and create high-quality digital content, including Twitter threads, video clips, GIFs, digital images, and infographics to help promote content on social channels;
Live-tweet press conferences and other news moments as appropriate;
Work in conjunction with the VP of Audience Development to manage regular data reporting and provide recommendations for content and strategy optimization based on KPIs, benchmarks, and more;
Work across teams to help create and execute virtual and live fundraising events and campaigns;
Build and strengthen our relationships with experts and influencers in our spheres in order to expand the reach of our content and community;
Work with Executive Editor and Senior Editors to craft a cohesive editorial voice and execute content as related to the news cycle and conversations on all social platforms;
Stay informed on news and changing trends, best practices, and tools in social media management;
Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Note: This role is part of a collective bargaining unit, represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, and specific employment terms are subject to collective bargaining.
COMPENSATION Rewire News Group offers competitive compensation and a generous benefits package that includes a 401(k) plan with employer contributions; health and dental insurance; flexible spending accounts; vacation and sick leave; and employer-paid life insurance, AD&D, STD, and LTD. Salary range: $60-70k, depending on demonstrated experience, skills, and seniority.
QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate for this position demonstrates:
At least three (3) years of strong and demonstrated experience in social media management and content creation, including conducting social media campaigns, and depth of knowledge in the medium;
Proficiency in use of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, web publishing platforms (including WordPress), and photo/video editing software like Photoshop and iMovie or Final Cut Pro;
Experience in increasing the size and diversity of audiences online;
Ability to implement and execute Rewire News Group’s voice across all platforms;
Experience conceiving and creating high-quality digital content for social, ideally in a newsroom or similar environment;
A history of excellence in innovation and experimentation, taking initiative, leading a strategy, and following through;
An ability to create goals and plans to execute those goals, as well as the ability to evolve along with audience needs and expectations;
Experience in and willingness to run A/B tests to develop winning strategies;
A proven understanding of not just the mechanical tools to manage social platforms like Twitter and Facebook but also a passion for using those tools for meaningful engagement;
Demonstrated ability to engage successfully in both individual and teamwork, and the ability to take input and constructive feedback;
Ability to work remotely and on your own while also being present for your job and meeting your responsibilities;
Excellent written and oral communication skills, and a strong ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment;
Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary to promote a story or respond to a news moment;
A passion for reproductive rights, health, and justice;
A sense of humor and ability to use it judiciously through social media;
Willingness to follow and operate within stated Rewire News Group policies.
LOCATION Rewire News Group is primarily a virtual organization and therefore, candidates for this position must have a home or other location with secure internet access from which to work. Candidates must be based within the Continental U.S. and legally authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring employer sponsorship. Preference will be given to candidates in locations in which current staff operate with ideal candidates based in either the New York City or Washington, D.C., Metro areas.
