Job Description

Make our new daily show a must listen.
WPLN News is launching a daily news show this fall that will serve the Nashville region with insightful and engaging conversations on a wide range of topics, plus in-depth original reporting and the latest on the day’s top news. As the senior booking producer, you'll be responsible for building relationships with key sources and finding the perfect guests for the show's lead segment each day.
Those guests might be community leaders or people with just the right kind of lived experience to reflect on the day's news. They might be politicians who rarely give time to the media or CEOs whose policies are making headlines. Your role is to make sure that, every day, the show features someone whose conversation with the host will be talked about at dinner tables across Nashville that evening.
More: Don’t know much about Nashville? Here’s a snapshot.
This position is part of the production team, reporting to the executive producer and working closely with the host and the show's two multimedia producers. It's an ideal job for someone with a reporting or show-producing background who can do the following:
  • Creatively determine who are the people best in the moment to answer the pressing questions our listeners expect
  • Build genuine relationships with people in minority communities and others typically underrepresented in public media
  • Build sourcing relationships with people in power (politicians, business people, etc.)
  • Assess source diversity of show guests and help maintain a guest list that reflects the diversity of Nashville
  • Identify, book and ensure that the guest is prepared technically to be interviewed — either live or recorded
  • Prepare the host with nuanced background and outlines of questions and topics
  • Edit the final interview to time and on deadline for air, as needed
  • Prepare the audio or outtakes for any on-demand audio or web use
  • Plan long-term with an event or history calendar and prepare interviews for the host, along with the executive producer
  • Appreciate how the right guest can build the credibility and reputation of the show
  • Bring contacts on a local, regional or national scale that positions this program for success
  • Be bold, professional and confident with all manner of guests and smoothly handle all logistical details
  • Three or more years of daily news reporting or producing experience
  • Some experience working with on-air hosts
  • A resourceful background in securing sources or guests for stories or programs.
  • A superb ability to work under pressure and communicate effectively with a production team
  • Excellent research and interview preparation skills
  • A command of details and audio logistics to ensure a successful broadcast or recording
  • Comfort developing and maintaining a source and contact database
You'll be joining a newsroom that has produced groundbreaking podcasts, special projects and national investigations. You’ll also have access to the talent and creativity of our new music discovery station WNXP, and you can expand on the newsroom’s community engagement partnerships, including a regular collaboration with Nashville Noticias.

This position reports to the executive producer of the daily show. The salary starts at $60,000 and is commensurate with experience.
