Job Description

Position Description

Demand Justice Initiative seeks a Staff Writer to write about major Supreme Court decisions and other high-profile courts-related news and trends, including judicial nominations, court reform efforts, and legal news. The person in this role will focus on the ongoing threats to democracy and justice posed by the current state of the federal courts and the hyper-politicization of the judicial confirmation process.

Substantial knowledge of the law is necessary for this position. A J.D. is not required, but demonstrated experience writing about legal issues and familiarity with the judicial nominations process are major plus factors.

Note: The applications of people who previously applied to the Supreme Court Writing Fellowship role at Demand Justice will be automatically shared with the hiring manager for this position. If you applied for that position, you do not need to submit an additional application here.

Compensation and Benefits

The full-time salary range for this position is $60,000-$70,000, depending on experience, with a generous benefits package.

How to Apply

Email your resume and cover letter and a writing sample to jobs@demandjustice.org with “Writer” in the subject line.

Job Requirements

The person in this role will need to be:

  • A strong, voice-y writer who can distill complicated legal issues for a general audience, with a focus on practical implications for everyday people instead of hypertechnical, legal jargon
  • A skilled researcher with an interest in putting key court rulings in their political, social, and historical context
  • Responsive to the news cycle, and able to turn assignments around on tight deadlines
  • Eager to write with a clear-eyed perspective about the legal system’s failures to promote democracy, protect vulnerable people, and otherwise do something resembling justice.
