The Communications team is seeking a Writer to curate a selection of stories by leveraging their research and writing expertise—along with interpersonal skills—to produce a wide-ranging and informative report that captures a snapshot of Emerson Collective that informs and inspires our colleagues. On a regular basis, you will be interviewing individuals from our roster of leading voices on issues including education, immigration, cancer research, and climate change. You will use a custom CMS to write and send the newsletter and track analytics that help you refine your approach over time. You may also have opportunities to develop other internal and public-facing communications projects.
The ideal candidate for this role will be a curious, creative self-starter with a passion for Emerson Collective’s mission and portfolio of work. They must be capable of quickly developing relationships with teams and leaders throughout the organization, who ultimately guide the coverage in the newsletter. The candidate must be adaptable, ready to react to surprises in the news cycle and work with the Communications team to calibrate for message consistency. They must have sound and mature judgment and a proven track record navigating work that exhibits voice and creativity through approval processes with internal and external stakeholders. This position will report to the Senior Writer.
Emerson Collective is a Bay Area-based organization with offices in Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, Oakland, Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. This position could be based in New York, Washington, D.C., or Palo Alto, California.

Role and Responsibilities
Adhering to applicable internal and external communications standards established for the organization (e.g., style guides, communications industry standards, etc.).
Managing external partners who contribute to the biweekly briefing.
Grasping the variety of internal audiences and their needs and motivations to ensure product resonance.
Engaging with senior leaders and their teams, as well as on occasion external stakeholders with significant relationships to Emerson Collective, to develop content.
Ensuring that all published material has undergone the appropriate approvals processes.
Using and developing channel measurement and analytics to inform and improve audience understanding and drive efforts to increase traffic and engagement with the daily briefing.
Contributing to the Communications Team’s editorial output through writing for external and internal platforms as needed.
Embodying and promoting Emerson Collective values and ethics while demonstrating a passion for our mission.
Qualifications, Skills, and Requirements
5+ years of experience in writing-focused roles.
Exceptional writing and editing skills, with experience writing with voice for a wide variety of uses and channels.
Bachelor's Degree in English, communications, journalism or public relations preferred.
Experience researching a variety of topics and exercising judgment as to the quality of sources.
Journalistic attention to detail and the factual basis of arguments.
Ability to quickly identify relevant content from large volumes of information.
Ability to understand complex issues and construct compelling, logical, and nuanced arguments.
Understanding and awareness of relevant external environments and news cycles.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to encourage collaboration with other programs, national offices, and partners.
Ability to absorb multiple perspectives and collaboratively consider all elements of communications work.
Adaptability to rapidly changing priorities and ability to manage multiple deadlines and deliver high-quality work products in a fast-paced environment.
Enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity, a willingness to ask questions, and a strong desire to dive into oftentimes complex content.
