Job Description

Confidential is a well-funded news startup preparing to launch a digital publication this fall. This is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of an ambitious project. Our goal is to reach an influential audience hungry for a new way to understand complex stories. We want to show readers how a story crosses beats and how it’s best understood through multiple frames, including geopolitics, misinformation, economics, technology, science and more. We will prioritize data and research in our work.

We are hiring journalists with strong reporting, writing and analytical skills who would be excited by the challenge of taking a new approach to their beat and continually testing new formats. We want to lay out the who, what, when, etc., and explain the multiple frames through which to understand the bigger picture. We want reporters with subject-area expertise who see the forces animating their beats and how their beats intersect with others.  We will consider applicants with other professional backgrounds who can show us they have the area-specific expertise and writing skills to do the work.

Confidential is hiring a Climate Reporter to cover global climate change, its environmental and social impacts and the technologies emerging to combat it. We believe the climate beat is central to every other major story we will cover – from the economy to technology and geopolitics. An ideal candidate understands the science behind global climate change and speaks with the best minds in the relevant scientific fields regularly. They see climate as the most important story of our time and they’re eager to explain its significance across many subjects and storylines.

Responsibilities:

  • Pitch and execute daily, weekly and long-term climate stories for a domestic audience

  • Participate in formal and informal brainstorms to come up with cross-beat story ideas

  • Collaborate with the Science and Technology Editor to approach their beat creatively

  • Help us build a robust, loyal audience
