The Savannah Morning News is seeking a public safety watchdog reporter. Pushing beyond police narratives, blotters and briefs, this reporter will track trends, dig into data, search records and become immersed in the community to cover crime and safety in ways that have lasting impact and point toward solutions.

He/she puts stories into context and has an enterprising approach to the beat. The reporter writes breaking crime news that warrants follow-up coverage and looks for common threads by getting to know people beyond official sources and connecting with real people who live and work in Savannah’s neighborhoods.


• Is the public safety and criminal justice watchdog with community-centered reporting that informs and engages specific audiences and platforms through the use of metrics.

• Works toward becoming the community’s leading voice in area of expertise.

• Works with editors and content strategists to evaluate what's working and what's not and develops ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.

• Collaborates to provide all appropriate elements for stories (i.e., photos, videos and graphics). Captures basic photos and video as needed.

• Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.

• Use digital analytics to guide content decisions.

Job Requirements


• Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Experience writing investigative or solutions-oriented journalism.

• Strong communication skills, news judgment and headline-writing ability.

• Ability to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure.

• Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently.

• Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills; familiarity with AP style.

• Able to work occasional nights and weekends.
