Job Description

The Associate Director will lead Climate Nexus’ work on carbon dioxide removal (CDR), which will establish and carry out a cohesive communications program reaching media, policymakers and key constituencies on carbon removal — a necessary solution to keep the world safe from the worst impacts of climate change — with a particular focus on responsible investment in the development of direct air capture (DAC). They will report to the Senior Director, Science and Energy. This is a temporary full time position for 12 months with potential opportunity to renew. 

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic partnership management: Lead relationship development with key NGOs, stakeholders, and decisionmakers working on or interested in DAC and CDR, mapping the landscape to understand key concerns, and facilitating alignment through research, education, and messaging/strategic communications support
  • Media strategy, relations and outreach: Collaborate with partners to develop and oversee execution of media strategy including determining the news value of stories and new angles; craft media products (including statements, pitches, press releases); build and foster relationships with reporters and editors; cultivate spokespeople that reach target audiences; identify and lead rapid response where necessary
  • Science communications: Translate technical research and data into compelling communications products and messaging guidance to influence public opinion, policy debates, and media coverage
  • Project management: Manage internal cross-team and external collaboration to deliver complete products on time, work across multiple priorities and disciplines (including earned media, partnership management, digital marketing and polling/message development) to ensure appropriate coordination

Location:

Flexible. Climate Nexus has Washington, D.C. and New York City offices, although our staff is currently fully remote. Remote candidates will be considered, although occasional travel to our New York and D.C. offices will be required when it is safe.

While we value work/life balance, due to the nature of news this role will sometimes require work outside traditional hours. 

Compensation: 

The salary range for this position is $100,000 – $130,000, commensurate with experience. Job Requirements

Required

  • Skilled partnership manager able to build trusted relationships on complex issues 
  • Self-starting project leader who can work across multiple disciplines to deliver complete work on time 
  • Experience using a strategic communications approach to develop alignment and consensus on emerging and technical issues
  • Knowledge of (or excitement to learn about) carbon dioxide removal and its role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Flexible and able to move quickly on fast-breaking assignments
  • Strong verbal and written communication, able to convey ideas and thinking clearly and concisely
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace 

Preferred

  • At least 8 years of experience in communications, public relations and/or media relations, journalism, or science communications, with climate experience a plus
  • Experience in carbon dioxide removal or associated issues
  • Well-connected with journalists who cover issues related to climate change
  • Experience with communications tactics across media platforms (print, broadcast, web, digital)
  • Knowledge of federal policy landscape, particularly on climate change issues
  • Knowledge of earned media and marketing software, including Hubspot and Cision
  • Comfort with G-suite, Slack, Zoom, and other office software/platforms
