As a member of the Bates Communication team, the Staff Writer does a variety of writing and editing for college communications. This position reports to the Editorial Director/Director of Bates Magazine. Key accountabilities include:
Conducts interviews and gathers accurate information to write excellent deadline-driven news and feature stories for online Bates News, print Bates Magazine, and related Bates social media properties.
Provides writing and editing support for other college offices as requested by the Editorial Director.
Develops story ideas that strategically support institutional goals through editorial projects.
Copyedits, proofreads, and fact-checks content produced by the Bates Communications Office as well as content generated by clients and internal communications.
The successful candidate will have at least a Bachelor’s Degree preferably in the liberal arts or communications, and:
2+ years of relevant experience in journalism or the equivalent.
Experience in an academic environment and higher education, preferably the liberal arts, is strongly preferred.
Experience with writing about issues of equity, inclusion, and social justice, preferably within higher education, is strongly preferred.
Experience in text and page editing for both the academic and journalistic realms.
Experience following editorial style and guidelines.
