Al.com seeking editor to lead its Education Lab, Key audience coverage
Alabama Media Group is looking for an innovative news editor to lead its Education Lab and coverage around key audiences. This position will report to the vice president of content and be part of a four-person senior leadership team.
This editor will oversee the creation, launch and development of our Alabama-focused Education Lab, a team of solutions-focused journalists who will cover our state's education system by focusing on our students' education, and the policies and decisions that impact it. The editor should be able to set editorial strategy, coach reporters, imagine storytelling to meet our audiences where they are and show creative leadership.
This editor should be innovative -- we're not looking to do journalism as its always been done. We want to think boldly about how we might tell stories to meet audiences, help people understand the impact of those stories and do meaningful investigative work. This editor should believe in partnerships and collaborations. And, this person should expect to be part of the team that helps us think creatively about how to fund our work.
While creating the Ed Lab is the immediate priority for the editor, we expect that the audience, solutions-focused learnings and insights this person develops will be meaningful in the future of our overall news operation. This editor is expected to work with the organization's VP of content to move into taking those insights to lead audience-focused, innovative journalism across the organization. Those initiatives could develop from identifying unmet audience needs, passion topics, or by identifying a trend or coverage gap based on news events. This editor will be a key part of building AL.com's future.

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or a related field desired or comparable work experience
Minimum of 3 – 5 years of management and/or team leadership experience is highly desirable
Demonstrated experience within or knowledge of the education industry is strongly preferred
Deep experience with data and public records to uncover and report stories
Experience in shaping collaborations that allow us to engage others in our mission and provide funding for this avenue
Ability to create and implement strategies to respond to the evolving nature of the industry by experimenting with new models, platforms and ideas to stimulate audience engagement and revenue generation/growth
