Macalester College seeks to hire a Media Relations Manager to lead media relations for the college. This position serves in a strategic and highly visible role utilizing deep knowledge of the media, as well as best practices in digital communication to elevate the visibility of the college. The Media Relations Manager partners with members of the Communications and Marketing team and campus colleagues on a range of written, multi-platform communication.
Develops and implements a proactive media relations strategy that raises the visibility of the college among prospective students, alumni and other audiences. Effectively ties the expertise of Macalester faculty, staff, and students to trends and topics of national or specialized audience interest.
Builds relationships with, and manages inquiries from, reporters.
Writes college announcements, background pieces, and human-interest stories for a range channels, including the college website, alumni newsletters, and social posts.
Works closely with the digital team on cross-platform storytelling.
Contributes to strategic planning, messaging, and issues management.
Actively engages in learning and practices principles of social justice and inclusion to create and sustain a welcoming and inclusive environment across the Macalester community.
Other duties as assigned
3-5 years of relevant experience in media relations, writing, social media and issues management with a proven track record of sharing sources and ideas with reporters that resulted in stories.
Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
Ability to successfully develop and implement a strategic media relations plan that supports the college’s reputation and visibility priorities.
Demonstrated organizational and project management skills with the ability to work creatively and collaboratively with others while adhering to timelines and deadlines.
Experience embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view in order to foster an inclusive work environment.
