Street Spirit Newspaper
Editor-In-Chief (Full-Time)
Youth Spirit Artworks, a Berkeley based nonprofit organization, seeks an Editor-In-Chief for Street Spirit, a 22-year old Northern California newspaper, covering homelessness, poverty, social justice and community issues.
The Editor-In-Chief is responsible for all aspects of editing, publishing and organizing distribution of Street Spirit, which publishes 15,000 newspapers monthly and has more than 80 regular homeless street vendors.
The job includes:
*Working with freelance writers, photographers and poets.
* Designing regular monthly editions.
* Organizing and holding regular meetings of the Street Spirit Editorial Supervising Board and the Journalism Advisory Board, a group of volunteer former and working journalists and photographers.
* Organizing and working with the homeless street vendors and the vendor coordinator.
* Building and maintaining donor support.
* Multi-media coordination.
*Attending Youth Spirit Artworks staff meetings and other activities.

Job Requirements

* Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English or creative writing strongly preferred.
*2 to 3 years’ experience working for a newspaper, including a student newspaper, strongly preferred.
*Experience with multi-media and social media.
*Advanced knowledge and experience with of Adobe InDesign required.
*Experience working with diverse racial and cultural populations in an urban setting preferred.
*Experience working with homeless people, including youth and people living in poverty, a huge plus.
*Deep commitment to social justice, advocacy journalist and working to end homelessness and poverty preferred.
The job is based at Youth Spirit Artworks (YSA) in South Berkeley, on the Oakland border at 1740 Alcatraz Ave. It is full-time.  For more information about Youth Spirit Artworks, please visit
