City Limits, an award-winning New York City urban affairs news outlet, seeks an experienced journalist for a full-time position on our growing team.
City Limits uses investigative journalism through the prism of New York City to identify urban problems, examine their causes, explore solutions, and equip communities to take action. Founded in 1976 in the midst of New York’s fiscal crisis, City Limits exists to inform democracy and equip citizens to create a more just city. The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded by foundation support, ad sponsorship and donations from readers. We publish news on our website (citylimits.org) as well as via radio, television, print and online partners.
This staff writer will primarily be charged with producing our coverage of New York City's neighborhood rezonings and its affordable-housing policy but will also be a member of our editorial team and a participant in our larger work to cover the city.
Responsibilities will include
identifying, pitching, reporting and writing news articles on a regular basis, with daily, weekly and longer-term deadlines
promoting City Limits via social media
representing City Limits in public appearances at events and on broadcast media
occasionally editing copy from freelancers and interns
helping to shape larger editorial projects
consulting on art and graphics
providing input on grant applications
working with interns
The winning candidate will have substantial experience producing spot news as well as in-depth, explanatory, enterprise, investigative and feature stories. This reporter must have a knack for writing fast and/or writing deep, depending on circumstances. A commitment to our mission and a willingness to pitch in where needed is crucial. Demonstrated ability to manage a beat — cultivating sources, developing story ideas, following story lines, and becoming an expert on the topic area — is essential.
Talent for producing video, podcast/audio, photography and/or data visualization—as well as solid text reporting—is desired. Familiarity with housing policy and New York City is a major plus.
This job offers a competitive salary and benefits (vacation, health, dental).
Applicants should send a cover letter, resume, three references and three to five clips to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Application deadline is March 15. A start date in early May is likely.
This is an exempt position based out of our Harlem office.
City Limits is an equal opportunity employer.
